An alarming new study shows that 1 out of 5 patients is released from the hospital before his vital signs are stable. The study released in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, was conducted by Dr. Oanh Nguyen (Assistant Professor Internal Medicine Department of Clinical Science), Dr. Anil Makam  (Assistant Professor Internal Medicine Department of Clinical Science) and Dr. Ethan A. Halm (Professor Internal Medicine Department of Clinical Sciences and Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine), all from the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center.

kayak7 people suffered personal injury in New York after a NY Waterway ferry backed up into their kayaking group. The kayakers were part of a routine guided tour of 10 kayaks organized by the Manhattan Kayak Co. The collision occurred on the Hudson River as the ferry was pulling out of Pier 79. He was maneuvering to turn South to head to Wall Street. Police said the sun glare may have prevented the captain from seeing the group of kayakers. The captain passed a breathalyzer test. He was 100% sober.

The most injured of the kayakers was the guide, a veteran with the kayaking company. He his arm was lacerated to the bone. He lost a lot of blood and lost consciousness. This morning 6 of the 7 kayakers injured were still in the hospital. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

3 people died and 11 people were injured in  a NYC crash. This morning around 4:20 am several cars and a truck collided on the Long Island Expressway near Maurice Ave in Maspeth, Queens. 3 people died in the collision. 4 injured people were transported to the hospital including two in critical condition. 7 others were treated for minor injuries at the scene of the accident. According to CBS, a first car hit the guardrail and split in two. A second car behind it tried to avoid it and crashed as well. A dump truck then crashed into several cars in front of him. This is the second accident this month in which multiple people were killed in an accident on The L.I.E. In the prior accident 6 people died when a car crossed the center median hitting two cars.

pedestrian struck by carA 65 year old pedestrian died in a NYC accident yesterday night. The victim was crossing Bronxdale Ave in Morris Park, Bronx, when he was hit by a van. The van was a light color. The driver was travelling west. The impact was so strong that the pedestrian flew in the air, and landed on another car. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries. The driver of the van fled the scene of the accident. Over three days, 3 pedestrian died in traffic accidents in New York City. Two days ago a pedestrian died after being struck by an ambulance in Manhattan. Three days ago a woman died after being hit by a drunk driver in Queens.

alcohol withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the level of addictionFailure to diagnose alcohol withdrawal symptom (AWS) can be medical malpractice that may cause severe injury or even death in some cases. The ECRI Institute  is looking at options to  better “Identify Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms Early and Ease Patients’ Care”.

An estimated 20 % of the patients that are admitted in US hospitals show symptoms of alcohol abuse or dependence. Those that are admitted for alcohol poisoning and detoxification may be difficult to treat but their alcohol withdrawal symptoms will usually be properly diagnosed and addressed.

Patients at a higher higher risk to be misdiagnosed for alcohol withdrawal symptoms are those who are admitted for a different medical condition than alcohol intoxication or dependence.

A pedestrian suffered critical injury after being hit by a car in New York City. The 67 year old man was crossing 43rd Street near Fort Hamilton Parkway in Borough Park, Brooklyn, when a driver suddenly backed into him.  It is unclear why the 44 year old driver started to drive in reverse. The police told the NY Daily News he didn’t have a license. The police was also tested him to determine if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

drunk driving A woman died in a car accident in New York Yesterday. The accident was caused by a drunk driver. 49 year old Aissatou Diallo was travelling with her 16 year old son on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on their way to a wedding. A relative who was traveling in front of them had a flat tire. They stopped to help him. As Aissatou was waiting next to her car, a drunk driver rear ended her car. The car careened into the mother and sent her flying off the elevated highway. After the accident, the drunk driver tried to flee the scene of the accident on foot. He was chased  by Diallo’s son who caught him and held him until the arrival of the police. Diallo’s son told the police that the driver, 43 year old Vladimir Menin, was so drunk that he couldn’t speak coherently.  Aissatou Diallo was transported to the hospital in critical condition. She later died from her injuries.

NYC pedestrian accident locationA pedestrian was hit by an ambulance in New York yesterday afternoon. 81 year old Gen Zhan was crossing East 14th Street and Second Ave., NYC in the crosswalk when the ambulance struck him. The ambulance was responding to a call but didn’t have its lights or sirens on. According to ABC7 the driver had a green arrow and the right of way when he made the turn. The driver stayed at the scene of the accident. The elderly pedestrian was transported to the hospital with severe body trauma. He later died from his injuries. We are having a rash of pedestrian accident in NYC.
