New York Brain Injury Awareness Month

In New York, as a result of traumatic brain injuries 385 people per day visit emergency rooms or are hospitalized as inpatients. 140,000 New Yorkers are injured every year, that’s 3 times the capacity of Yankees Stadium!

The main cause of traumatic brain injuries are falls and motor vehicle accidents, mostly car accidents but motorcycle accidents as well as bus and truck accidents are also a common cause of traumatic brain injuries. Assault is the third cause of TBI in New York. Other leading causes of brain injuries include bicycle accidents, pedestrian accidents or people struck by or against type of accidents.

Here are some findings based on the most recent statistics from the New York State Department of Health Department

– New Yorkers above 65 year old are the most at risk to fall and be hospitalized for a traumatic brain injury.

– Young adults are the most at risk to be hospitalized for traumatic brain injury after a motor vehicle accident (mostly car accidents) in New York State.

– Assault is the third cause of hospitalization for traumatic brain injury and the majority of the patients are between 25 and 44 year old.

– In New York, pedestrians aged 45 to 64 year old are the most at risk to be hospitalized for TBI after being knocked down by a motor vehicle. Younger and older adults are also at risk.

– Struck by or struck against brain injury related hospitalizations are caused by contacts between two people (ie during sport activities) or a person and an object or when a person is caught between two objects. All age categories among children, teens and adults are at risk to be hospitalized for traumatic brain injuries related to these types of accidents.

– Mostly adults between 25 and 64 year old are hospitalized for traumatic brain injury after a motorcycle accident in New York.

– In New York Sate, cyclists aged 25 to 44 year old have the highest risk to be hospitalized for TBI after a crash with a motor vehicle. Young adults and teenagers also are at risk.

This month, the New York State Department of Health and the Brain injury Association of New York State are teaming up in a campain to encourage New Yorkers to learn about brain injuries and to follow safety rules to help prevent them. In the city, Mayor Bloomberg Proclaims March to be Brain Injury Awareness Month in New York City.
