11-Year-Old Pedestrian Critically Injured in Brooklyn Hit-and-Run on Ocean Parkway

An 11-year-old pedestrian was struck and critically injured Monday evening in Gravesend, Brooklyn, by the driver of a black Acura sedan who fled the scene, according to police reports. The hit-and-run occurred around 5:50 p.m. near Avenue V and Ocean Parkway, an intersection known for heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene.
“I heard the crash. I saw the boy laying flat on the street not moving,” said Renee Beyda, 60, who witnessed the impact. Debris from the crash also injured a 25-year-old man, who suffered leg injuries and was heard screaming in pain as bystanders rushed to help.

Both victims were transported by EMS to Maimonides Medical Center. The boy remains in critical condition, while the 25-year-old is reportedly in stable condition.

The Driver Fled the Scene

Police say the driver sped off after the collision but abandoned the damaged vehicle only four blocks away, near Ocean Parkway and Avenue R. The black Acura’s windshield was shattered and the front passenger side hood was severely damaged. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is actively investigating the crash, but as of late Monday, the driver remained at large.

Legal Perspective: Hit-and-Run Crashes Demand Accountability

As Brooklyn car accident lawyers, we have seen far too many tragedies caused by reckless drivers who choose to flee rather than help the injured. In New York, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury is not just a traffic violation—it is a serious crime that can lead to felony charges, significant prison time, and license revocation.

Victims of hit-and-run collisions and their families may still have legal avenues for compensation, including:

  • Uninsured Motorist (UM) claims under their own auto insurance policy,

  • No-Fault benefits for medical expenses and lost wages, and

  • Potential civil lawsuits if the driver is identified.

Even when the driver is not immediately located, an experienced attorney can help identify all available sources of recovery and coordinate with law enforcement investigations.

Brooklyn’s Ongoing Pedestrian Safety Crisis

Ocean Parkway, one of Brooklyn’s busiest arterial roads, has been the site of numerous serious pedestrian and bicycle crashes in recent years. Intersections like Avenue V require stronger enforcement and infrastructure changes—such as raised crosswalks, traffic cameras, and pedestrian refuge islands—to protect residents, especially children walking home from school.
