After 9 year old Cooper Stock was fatally struck by a cab driver in New York City on Friday Night, many in New York are wondering if cab drivers can kill with impunity as in most accidents the police are allegedly not thoroughly investigating criminal wrongdoing at the scene. According to an article in the New York Post, only one cab driver was criminally charged out of 21 accidents that seriously injured or killed pedestrians or bicyclists.

4 people were injured in a car accident that happened Sunday night at a Popeye restaurant in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York. The 62 year old driver of the SUV lost control of his car which crashed into the front window of the restaurant. The driver and the passenger as well as two customers were injured. One person was in critical condition, two suffered serious personal injury and one suffered minor injury. The front wall of the restaurant was completely destroyed.

32 year old Nydja Herring died in a drunk driving car accident in NYC this weekend. The accident happened Saturday at 5.30 pm as the mother of the 2 year old twins had just stepped out to run errands for the toddlers at a store nearby. Nydja was crossing the street at the intersection of East Tremont Ave and Van Nest Ave in the Bronx when a drunk driver, 28 year old Augustus Jenkin plowed into her. Jenkins was driving with a suspended license and had 3 passengers in in the car including two children 4 and 10 years old.

After two pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents on the Upper West Side in NYC on Friday night, Scott Stringer said that “Upper West Side pedestrian deaths send a clear message: Time for studying the 96th St traffic corridor is over, NYC needs to take action to prevent fatalities. I look forward to working with the DOT to take all necessary steps to protect road users – pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike – and to implement a Vision Zero agenda that makes every street in every borough as safe as it can be. Our City has already had nine traffic-related deaths in 2014, and my heart goes out to the families of last night’s victims.”

Alexander Shear, 73, died in a bus accident in New York on Friday night. The accident happened on 96th street and Broadway on the Upper West Side of NYC.

Alexander Shear who was famous in New York for his pop culture collection was hit and dragged by a Shafer tour bus driver who was making a turn from Broadway to 96th street. The Tour Bus driver didn’t realize he had hit anyone and dragged the man to his death. Horrified witnesses had to chase him to stop him.

A 9 year old boy died in a car accident in NYC on Friday night. Copper Stock was walking with his father, the oncologist Richard Stock, on the Upper West Side in New York City on Friday night when the fatal accident occurred. The young boy and his dad were trying to cross the intersection of West End Ave and West 97th Street when they were struck by a taxi driver making a left turn. Cooper, a third grader at The Calhoun School died at the hospital. He loved the Knicks, the New York Yankees and classic rock ‘n’ roll.

Unfortunately, pedestrians being struck by vehicles making left turns are all to common in NYC.

7 pedestrians died in car accidents in NYC during the first 12 days of 2014. The Daily News projected that at this rate, the number of pedestrians who would die after being struck by a car in New York City would reach 200 by the end of the year compared to 156 in 2013, 152 in 2022 and 142 in 2011.

Mother Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is one of the most powerful non profit organizations against drunk driving. MADD was created in 1980 by Candice Lightner after her 13 year old daughter was killed by a drunken hit and run driver. Since its inception the number of wrongful deaths related to drunk driving car accidents has been cut by half. The organization just released its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving: 2014 Report to the Nation which describes MADD’s advocacy work since the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving was launched in 2006. The report looks at the efforts that each State made to fight drunk driving and gave them a ranking of 0 to 5 stars based on the following measures and reforms:

  • Ignition Interlocks
  • Sobriety Checkpoints
  • Administrative License Revocation
  • Child Endangerments
  • No-Refusal Events

New York received a star for each of the 4 first points but the legislature still needs to pass the no-refusal legislation for the State to get its Five stars.

A class I product recall has been issued by the FDA for the Puritan Bennett 840 Series Ventilator manufactured by Covidien. A software problem may cause the Ventilator to stop functioning, triggering the safety alarm and causing the patient to suddenly be required to breathe on his or her own. This medical device is usually used on critically ill patients who may not be able to breathe without the ventilator. Therefore if the ventilator inadvertently stops the patient may suffer serious personal injury or death.

25 pedestrians died in car accidents in New York last November according to the recently released NYPD car accident statistics. This is the highest number of pedestrian fatalities per month in 2013. In comparison, the number of pedestrian deaths in November 2012 was 8. Among these 25 pedestrians struck by a car, 6 were in Manhattan, 8 in the Bronx, 3 in Brooklyn, 6 in Queens and 2 in Staten Island.
