StarNetworkMagnicubesLARGE.jpgAs part of a settlement of an administrative case based on product defect filed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in December 2012, the company Star Networks USA announced a voluntary recall of all Magnicubes Spheres sets and Magnicube Cubes sets. These sets contains high power rare earth magnets that create a substantial injury hazard. The CPSC received numerous reports describing teenagers or children who died or suffered serious personal injury requiring surgery after ingesting the small magnets.

A woman in her 20s was hospitalized in critical condition after she was hit by a van last night around 3:00 am. According to the New York Daily News, the woman was running across 10th Street under a pouring rain when a van driving northbound on Hudson St. hit her. The driver stayed at the scene and he wasn’t charged. He told the police he never saw the woman.

Last year in New York 151 people were struck by subway trains and 53 of them died. There are many reasons why people are being injured or killed by a train: they fall on the tracks after feeling ill, they are pushed by someone else, they loose something on the track and try to go pick it up or they jump in front of the train to commit suicide. To stop the staggering amount of injuries and deaths happening on its tracks, the MTA is testing sensors and video systems that would prevent people who fall on the tracks to be struck by a train. The systems use high-tech devices to alert the driver if someone falls on the tracks. The tests look promising and the MTA executives are planning to install such systems in subway stations between 2015 and 2019.

A car accident near the Long Island Expressway in Maspeth, Queens, NYC, left 4 men injured on Sunday morning. Three men in their 20ies were riding in a Nissan Sedan when the driver ran a red light and crashed into a Mercedes Benz. The driver of the Mercedes Benz was critically injured while the three young men suffered serious personal injury. The police found marijuana and heroin in the Nissan. The three men are expected to be charged after their release from the hospital.

tour%20bus%20accident%20time%20square.jpgAt least 14 people suffered personal injury after the driver of a doudble-decker red Gray Line sightseeing bus sideswiped a parked double-decker City Sights bus and another vehicle before jumping the curb onto the sidewalk at 47th Street ad 7th Ave in Manhattan next to the TKTS discount ticket. The bus crash happened in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday and sent a traffic light falling to the ground with debris flying all over the place in an area crowded with tourists. 3 people sustained serious injuries while all others were minor. The bus driver was initially arrested by the police and charged for driving while impaired but yesterday night the prosecutors delayed charges against him and released him from custody.

Speeding and failure to yield to pedestrians are the leading causes of traffic fatalities and personal injuries to pedestrians in New York City. Therefore as part of the Vision Zero Initiative all NYPD precincts have been instructed at the beginning of this year to increase enforcement of the most dangerous traffic violations.

A new report card from Transportation Alternatives published last week looks at six months of Vision Zero Traffic Enforcement in New York City. Globally across the city, speeding tickets increased by 32% and tickets for failure to yield increased by 153% for the first 6 months of 2014 compared to the first 6 months of 2013. However while looking at the numbers precinct by precinct, Transportation Alternative discovered huge discrepancies. The most troubling was to find neighborhood precincts with similar traffic conditions and street design that had very different enforcement efforts. For example In Harlem,the 26th Precinct nearly doubled the number of speeding summonses issued from last year(294 to 533),

while the adjacent 30th Precinctin Washington Heights issued half as many summonses as they did the prior year.

11 firefighters and 2 residents suffered personal injury in a 4-alarm fire that burned two houses on Hill Avenue in the Bronx, NYC yesterday afternoon. The fire started at 4519 Hill Ave and spread to 4515 and 4523 Hill Ave. One of the firefighters was seriously inured, 8 of them were taken to the hospital for minor wounds treatment and 2 others were treated on site. Two residents also suffered personal injury. One of them was injured after he jumped from a second floor window to escape the flames.

Gary%20Messina.jpgA skydiving student died and his instructor suffered critical personal injury in a skydiving accident in Calverton, Long Island, NY, yesterday. According to officials, the student, Garry Messina, a NYC correction officer who was celebrating his 25 year old birthday, died on impact after a parachute failure during a tandem jump.

In a statement, Rich Winstock, the director of the United States Parachute Association (USPA), said that the accident was under investigation with the Federal Aviation Administration and that wind may have been a factor.

According to statistics from the USPA, in 2013, there were 24 skydiving fatalities out of 3.2 million jumps, that’s a 0.0075 fatalities per 1000 jumps. For tandem skydiving the fatality rate is 0.003 student fatalities per 1000 tandem jumps. The rate of personal injury is approximately 3 per 10,000 skydives.
