Only 4 Hospitals in New York State made it to the Money and The Leapfrog Group “Best Hospitals in America” List

Surgery at HospitalWhile too many hospitals in the US are sacrificing patient safety for profit, a small number of them are dedicated to focus on healthcare safety and quality.

NYU Langone Hospitals in New York, NY, Gouverneur Hospital in Gouverneur, NY, White Plains Hospital in White Plains, NY and NYU Langone Hospital Long Island in Mineola, NY are the only 4 hospitals in New York state that have been included in the Best Hospitals in America compiled by Money and the Leapfrog Group.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization helping consumers to make informed decision. To be part of the list, hospitals that previously received a A grade from a previous assessment went through an additional assessment of  39 performance measures in the 7 following categories:

  • inpatient care management
  • complex surgeries (adult and pediatric)
  • pediatric care
  • maternity care
  • medication safety
  • outpatient procedures
  • infections

Any hospital exceeding national mortality rate for heart attack and heart failure, coronary bypass surgery or pneumonia or other pulmonary diseases were automatically disqualified.

148 hospitals nationally qualified and were divided into:

  • pediatric hospitals
  • general hospitals
  • rural hospitals
  • large teaching hospitals
  • small teaching hospitals

Among this list only one hospital in New York City made it to the cut: the NYU Langone, a large teaching hospital located in Manhattan. Another NYU Langone Hospital located in Mineola, Long Island also made it. It is a small teaching hospital.

With only 4 hospitals selected in the entire state, just like Illinois, South Carolina, Missouri, Texas and Ohio, New York does not score very well compared to other States like Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, California, Florida or New Jersey that all had 10 hospitals selected. Virginia had 9 hospitals selected, Michigan 7, Maine and North Carolina 6 , Colorado and Louisiana 5.

Scoring behind New York are the states of Tennessee and Georgia with 3 hospitals selected, Washington and Oklahoma with 2, Indiana, Nebraska, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada  with 1.

States that were not mentioned above did not have any hospitals passing the Money/Leapfrog Group criteria.
