The epidemic number of wrongful death related to pedestrians and bicyclists hit by vehicles reached a new high on Wednesday night as 4 people were killed in an half an hour time span in New York City. A man who was riding his bike in Queens died after being hit by a truck whose driver fled. A an 88-year-old woman crossing Ave. C in Manhattan was killed after being struck by a Con Ed truck and two women were killed when a car hit them as they crossed Forest Hill Road in Staten Island.

In New York lately pedestrians have been killed in car accidents on an almost daily basis. Last week another 7 people were killed in traffic accidents, most of them because of driver error.

On Friday 66 year old Maria Montalvo was struck in a crosswalk by a reckless driver making a left turn. Maria is the 29th senior person killed by a car in 2013.

On Monday 3 other people were killed on New York sidewalks: in Queens a young driver jumped the curb and killed Man Chit Cheng, 59, and Muang Lin, 41 and in East Harlem a woman was killed by a cab driver who lost control of his vehicle after he struck a truck.

An ambulette driver was charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with the death of an 86-year-old nursing home resident.

Juan Garcia who was transporting 86 year old Theresa Massagli in a wheelchair failed to buckle her seat belt. When he made a sudden stop, she flew out of her wheelchair and landed on her hip. Even though she was crying and moaning because of the pain, the driver dropped her back at the Goldcrest nursing home instead of bringing her to nearby Jacobi Hospital. She was then examine by a doctor and a nurse on duty at the nursing home and put to bed. After her children were informed of the incident they took their mother to the Westchester Square hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken left hip and pelvis. She died after few weeks of excruciating pain.

The production of the sport supplement “Craze” was suspended by the manufacturer Driven Sports at the end of last month after tests conducted by the Harvard Medical School revealed the supplement contains potentially dangerous amounts of methamphetamine analog. The owner of Driven Sports, Matt Cahill was convicted in 2005 of felony charges for the sale of the weight-loss pills made from a highly toxic chemical pesticide banned from human consumption. Another pedestrian was killed in a car accident in New York. A 74 year old woman was in a crosswalk on E. 141st street in South Bronx when she was hit by an SUV heading South on Beekman Street. She suffered a severe head injury and died at the hospital.

After striking the pedestrian, the SUV jumped the curb and ran into a building. The driver, a 47 year old woman and her passenger, an 8 year old girl suffered minor injuries.

leg%20rest.jpgA 70 year old man died after being assaulted by another resident at Ocean Promenade Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rockaway, Queens, New York last night. The attacker used the leg rest of a wheel chair to beat the victim to death according to the police.A dispute over the curtain between their beds sparked the attack. The two men who were sharing the same room since July never got along according to residents.

After too many pedestrians suffered personal injury or wrongful death in traffic accidents on Fourth Ave in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, New York City proposed to trim traffic lanes to slow speeding drivers. This proposal was rejected by the Brooklyn Community Board 10. According to the Brooklyn Daily, some board members said they wanted the avenue to keep its current format, even if it endangers residents walking in the neighborhood.
A previous study for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the six-mile thoroughfare was the third most dangerous road in Brooklyn, tied with Avenue U and Eastern Parkway. The study shows that 4 pedestrians were killed on the strip between 2008 and 2010, mostly elderly and children. This year, two pedestrians have been killed at this location.

Courtesy of Department of Transportation: The city was also proposing an island to give refuge to pedestrians crossing Fourth Avenue on the southern side of 86th Street. The board rejected it as well.

Jose Torres, 57, died yesterday after being struck by a tow truck in a Crosswalk at East 181st Street and Southern Boulevard in the Bronx, New York. The police are still investigating the reason for the accident. Read more in the New York Daily News

Earlier this week on Wednesday afternoon 12 year old Samuel Cohen-Eckstein was struck by a van as he ran across a Brooklyn street in New York to chase after a soccer ball. The boy who suffered serious injury was rushed to the hospital where he died. Read more in The New York Daily News
