Product Liability: Several car accidents linked to defective tie-rod assembly prompt Chrysler to recall 1.2 million Ram Trucks

Seven car accidents and two injuries have been caused by a defective tie-rod assembly that became misaligned in some Chrysler Ram Trucks. The misalignment can lead to component fracture and steering loss. These accidents prompted a recall by Chrysler that will include an estimated 842,400 model-year 2003-2008 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks. Two additional campaigns are being conducted to capture those vehicles known to have tie-rod assemblies linked to previous recalls. They comprise 294,000 model-year 2008-2012 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, chassis cabs and 2008 Ram 1500 4×4 Mega Cabs; plus 43,500 model-year 2008-2012 Ram 4500 and 5500 4×4 chassis cabs.

You must be kidding… Driving Selfies are the latest craze on Instagram

More than 3000 people die every year in distracted driving accidents but some reckless drivers don’t seem to care. The new “trendy” thing to do is to post Driving Selfies on Instagram and other social media sites. This afternoon research for #drivingselfie on Instagram returned 3,774 posts, #drivingselfies 1,886 posts #drivingtowork 9,826 posts and #hopeidontcrash 730 posts.

These reckless drivers are unnecessarily risking their lives and the lives of innocent people. Driving is not a game.

74 year old pedestrian killed in car accident in South Bronx, New york

Another pedestrian was killed in a car accident in New York. A 74 year old woman was in a crosswalk on E. 141st street in South Bronx when she was hit by an SUV heading South on Beekman Street. She suffered a severe head injury and died at the hospital.

After striking the pedestrian, the SUV jumped the curb and ran into a building. The driver, a 47 year old woman and her passenger, an 8 year old girl suffered minor injuries.

Product Liability – Defective Car : Honda is recalling 344,000 Odyssey Minivans for brake issue

Because a defective sensor may cause the car to brake on its own, Honda is recalling its Odyssey minivans from the 2007 and 2008 model years. Honda will install a new sensor on all recalled models. However new sensors will not be available until the spring of 2014.

In the meantime Honda recommends to minivan owners to start their vehicle with the wheels facing straight ahead, allowing the system to properly recalibrate. Drivers who experience unexpected braking should stop and restart the minivan. Tapping on the brake pedal “will immediately stop the self-braking action,” Honda said.

So far no injury or crash has been reported.

Two pedestrians died after being struck by an SUV in two separate car accidents in Brooklyn and Queens New York

A 50 year old woman died after being struck by a car when she was crossing crossing Pennsylvania Ave. near Glenmore Ave in Brooklyn Wednesday night. 30 minutes later a similar accident happened in Queens. A 40 year old man died after he was struck by a car while crossing Jamaica Ave.

Product Liability – Defective Car: 188,000 SUVs recalled by Nissan to fix brake issue

Defective brake control software may increase the risk of an accident for Nissan Pathfinders from model years 2013 and 2014, as well as Infiniti JX35 SUVs from model year 2013, and QX60 SUVs from model year 2014.

In the affected vehicles, on rough or uneven roads, software settings in the antilock braking system may lead to stopping distances that are longer than drivers expect, Nissan said.

In New York, most drivers who carelessly killed or injured a pedestrian or bicyclist are not held responsible for their acts

In New York City in 2012 there were 152 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities and 14,327 injuries. Of those 14,479 crashes, DMV data show NYPD cited 101 motorists for careless driving. That’s a citation rate of 0.7%.

The careless driving law was initiated in 2009 and was intended as a minimum penalty to hold drivers who injure and kill accountable, in lieu of a more serious criminal charge. However after summonses were dismissed in court because officers weren’t witnessing violations the NYPD prohibited cops from issuing careless driving citations unless an officer witnesses a violation, or the crash is investigated by the Collision Investigation Squad (previously known as the Accident Investigation Squad). CIS only investigates around 300 crashes a year. As a consequence NYPD doesn’t enforce the law against careless driving and most reckless drivers are never being held accountable for their acts.

Even though Fourth Ave has a high record of pedestrian injury and death, Brooklyn’s Community Board rejects city’s plan for slowing traffic to prevent car accidents

After too many pedestrians suffered personal injury or wrongful death in traffic accidents on Fourth Ave in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, New York City proposed to trim traffic lanes to slow speeding drivers. This proposal was rejected by the Brooklyn Community Board 10. According to the Brooklyn Daily, some board members said they wanted the avenue to keep its current format, even if it endangers residents walking in the neighborhood.
A previous study for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the six-mile thoroughfare was the third most dangerous road in Brooklyn, tied with Avenue U and Eastern Parkway. The study shows that 4 pedestrians were killed on the strip between 2008 and 2010, mostly elderly and children. This year, two pedestrians have been killed at this location.

New York Car Accident: Brooklyn woman dies in a 3 vehicle crash

Rosa Eubanks, 54, was killed in a car accident involving 3 vehicles Tuesday morning. Rosa, a city bus driver, was driving to her depot when her car slammed into another car and and the course struck a tractor trailer truck at the intersection of Ralph and Foster Aves in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York.

Eubanks was married with 4 children and had been working for 19 years as a bus driver. She was an active supporter of Transport Workers Union Local 100. She died at Brookdale Hospital. The other driver was also injured and was transported to the hospital. He is in stable condition. The bus driver didn’t suffer any injury.
