A  19 year old was  seriously injured in a bicycle accident Monday early morning in Queens. The young man was riding on the eastbound bicycle lane along 34th street in Corona when he was struck by a truck turning right onto 105th street. The accident happened at night around 1:15 am. The truck driver stayed at the scene of the accident and wasn’t charged. The teenager was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for a severe leg injury. Read more in the NY Post

Tenants at many building in New York City and particularly rent-stabilized tenants are being endangered and harassed by negligent property owners that are allowed to start construction work after they asserted that their building was empty when filing with the NYC Department of Buildings.

Despite Mayor de Blasio’s blue print to improve the efficiency of the NYC DOB, and pledge to preserve and create rent stabilized apartment, tenants and some elected officials are complaining that the lack of enforcement has created a climate of lawlessness. A recent article in the New York Times explains  how unscrupulous  landlords and developers are defrauding the DOB with false fillings, endangering the life and safety of tenants and harassing them into leaving their apartments. The author, Mireya Navarro is providing numerous examples of cases where residents complaints were ignored or handled lightly by the Department of Buildings and owners were allowed to continue their work.

The Department of Buildings is aware of the false filling problem and has been working on upgrading their technology.  Among the improvements, the DOB announced that it was about to launch Inspection Ready, a new online tool that is supposed to  dramatically simplify compliance and reduce wait times when scheduling appointments for inspections. The system will include the ability to request and cancel appointments online, as well as view inspection results and documentation.

78 year old Lynn Reynolds  was making a left turn when she fatally struck a 14 year old pedestrian last year in Brooklyn, NYC.  She got out of her car, looked around and then got back into her car and drove home 4 blocks away. She was arraigned yesterday  for leaving the scene of a fatal accident but she claimed that she didn’t see the victim and thought  a ball struck the car. Reynolds, who was released on a $25,000 bail, will face anywhere from probation to seven years in prison if convicted. A man suffered serious personal  injury after he was intentionally run over by a driver with whom he had an argument minutes before the hit and run on 155th street and Union Street in the Bronx, NYC. The man was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The police were looking for a black Ford Taurus with Pennsylvania plates seen driving away from the scene.

Less than two hours later a driver apparently distracted by the TV trucks at the scene of the previous accident struck a pregnant woman. The woman suffered leg injuries and was transported to the hospital. Her husband who with her when the accident happened had to be handcuffed by the police after he assaulted the driver.

Two 19 year old Colgate University students were killed in a plane crash  yesterday afternoon in Morrisville, NY. Ryan Adams and Cathryn (Carey) Depuy ,  both Ridgefield natives.  The pair took off from Morrisville airport and flew 10 miles before crashing in a wooded area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released the preliminary data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) for  2014.   There where 4,659 fatal work injuries  in 2014.   This is the highest number of fatalities since 2011.

This high number of deaths on work sites is mostly explained by a revitalized economy and a decline in the unemployment rate in 2014. The rate of  workers fatalities stayed the same as the previous  year with 3.3 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Over the long term, the rate of worker fatalities has been slowly decreasing over the years indicating safer work conditions globally.

40% of the fatalities were caused by a transportation accident. Among transportation related fatalities, more than half  of them where accidents on roadways. Accidents involving pedestrian workers being struck by vehicles represented the second  largest category of fatal occupational injuries caused by transportation accidents.

 Two construction workers were injured after they fell from a building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan yesterday afternoon. The construction workers where  working on the $50 million renovation of the World Diamond   Tower  building  on Fifth Avenue  and W. 47th St.   They fell from the second floor mezzanine inside the building.  The FDNY has asked the City Department of Buildings to investigate whether a partial collapse of the mezzanine led to the fall. Derrick Walters died in a  motorcycle accident as he was being pursued by two police officers last  weekend in Brooklyn, NYC. (See previous  blog). The police are investigating if the two Brooklyn cops violated NYPD policy on vehicle pursuits. In the mean time the two officers were stripped of their shields and guns. imageThe way pediatricians are working on preventing personal injury for children and  teenagers is evolving. There was a time when doctors would be  taught  to provide the same advice for any family for each type of injury.  For example in the field of teen driver crash injury prevention, each teen would be treated the same way.

In a recent blog post published by the Center for Injury and Prevention, Flaura Koplin Winston, a  pediatrician, looks at the case of two teen drivers  who got  caught for speeding. The first  teen was diagnosed with ADHD and speeding was  just one of many other dangerous behaviors.  He needed proper medication and  behavioral therapy. The second  teen  was late for school and got a ticket speeding.  All he needed was an alarm clock.
