These defective products, manufactured in China, have been recalled after 165 incidents, 46 fires and more than $2.15 million in property damage were reported in the United States and Canada.

The recalls include more than 60 different models of 12 different brands that have been sold at AAFES, HH Gregg, Home Depot, Kmart, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, Sears and other stores nationwide and in Canada, and online at Amazon.com and Ebay.com, from January 2005 through August 2013.

$ 91.7 million was paid for more than 400 medical malpractice claims against the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2012. Cases included missed diagnoses, delayed treatment and procedures performed on wrong body parts. The highest settlement which was also the largest in 12 years was for $17.5 million to the family of Christopher Ellison who was left permanently incapacitated after getting teeth extracted at a Veterans Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Last year, the 152 VA hospitals and 190,000 doctors treated 5.6 million veterans, an increase of more than 30% compared to 10 years ago.

In the next 4 years, 1.2 million soldiers will become veterans. Some of them who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering post traumatic stress disorder while others survived injuries that would have been fatal during World War II or the Vietnam War.

This weekend in New York, two motorcyclists, one teen driver and one pedestrian died in traffic accidents.

In Queens two people died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday. The two motorcyclists were knocked off the bike they were riding after they clipped a SUV and crashed into the back of another car.

Spyors%20Panos.jpg Accused by the Office of Professional Medical Conduct of botching surgeries,faking surgeries, performing unnecessary surgeries and prolonging the ailment of hundreds of patients, Dr. Spyros Panos, an Upstate New York surgeon formerly practicing at Mid Hudson Medical Group in Poughkeepsie, N.Y was ordered to surrender his medical license by the state Board of Professional Medical Conduct. DR. Spyro is facing over 200 medical malpractice lawsuits.

The defective product, the OASYS Midline Occiput Plate, is a specific part of the OASYS system which is used in spinal surgery to promote fusion and provide stabilization at the junction between the occipital bone and the vertebrae in the cervical and thoracic spine (see picture below of the plate and of the whole OASYS system installed on the spine).

According to the FDA, the pin that connects the tulip head to the plate body can break after the surgery has been performed which may cause serious adverse health consequences including blood loss, nerve injury, and the need for revision surgery to replace the fractured implant.

Class I recalls are issued by the FDA for dangerous or defective products that predictably could cause serious health problems or death.

Work injuries resulting in death have been on the decline for the last 20 years. The total number of workers who died on the job was 4,383 in 2012 compared to 4,693 in 2011 and 6,217 twenty years ago according to the preliminary 2012 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published at the end of last month.

The decline is also confirmed in the preliminary rate of fatal work injuries which was 3.2 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full time worker in 2012 compared to 3.5 in 2011.

Traffic fatalities recorded during the last five years are at the lowest level ever recorded in New York City according to the recently released 2012 edition of “Sustainable Streets Index“.

In 2008, The New York City Department of Transportation launched a strategic plan called “Sustainable Streets” with the objective of improving traffic condtitions and increasing street safety with a special focus on pedestrians. The yearly publication of the Sustainable Street Index provides an overview of the efforts undertaken by The New York City DOT over the last year and measures their effect on traffic conditions and street safety.

Some of the projects completed in 2013 significantly reduced personal injuries related to crashes and improved traffic conditions. Among them it is worth mentioning:

A surgeon can be sued for Medical Malpractice if he or she failed to properly communicate care instructions to a patient after the surgery.

Recently Web M&M analyzed the case of a woman who needed arthroscopic surgery after she tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee.

The surgeon talked to the patient before the surgery and gave her postoperative instructions for ACL repair that included 50% weight bearing immediately after the surgery
