Despite Zero Vision Efforts to reduce Traffic Fatalities Another Pedestrian was Struck resulting in her Death Yesterday on the Upper West Side of Manhattan a Few Blocks Away from where Cooper Stock was Killed by a Taxi in January

A pedestrian was killed after a SUV making a left turn hit her and dragged her down a New York street for half a block . The pedestrian was 61 year old Jean Chamber, an artist who lived on the Upper west Side. She was crossing West End with the light when a SUV making a left turn from 95th street struck her causing her death.

The number of people killed and injured in traffic accidents in NYC during the first five months of 2014 decreased compared to the same period of 2013 with pedestrians deaths down by 21% and pedestrian personal injuries down by 7.5%

25 people died in vehicle accidents last May in NYC. Among them were 9 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, 3 vehicle passengers and 11 motorists.This is the highest number of people killed during the length of a month on New York City roads since the beginning of the year. Last April 21 people died in vehicle accidents and during the same month a year earlier, 15 people were killed in traffic accidents.
When looking at the numbers since the beginning of the year, the total number of people killed on the road in the city since the beginning of the year is 97 compared to 99 for the same period of 2013.

The number of pedestrian deaths was 9 during the month of May compared to 8 last April and 6 in May 2013. Since the beginning of the year 48 pedestrians lost their life in a traffic accident compared to 61 for the first 5 months of 2014, a decrease of 21%.

The number of cyclist deaths in May 2014 was stable at 2 compared to May 2013 and higher than last April, a month during which one cyclist died. The total number of cyclists who died in a traffic accident since the beginning of 2014 is 5 compared to 3 for the first five months of 2013.

The reckless unlicensed teen driver who killed 4 year old Ariel Russo while fleeing from the police on the Upper West Side of Manhattan was offered a reduced sentence and a sealed record if he plead guilty to manslaughter.

Franklin Reyes was 17 year old when he was busted for fatally hitting 4 year old Ariel Russo with his car as he was fleeing from the cops. According to prosecutors Reyes had been driving illegally since age 15 and was bragging on Facebook about speeding.

Ariel Russo’s family wanted the judge to treat Reyes as an adult and to sentence him with 15 years of jail. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro however called it a difficult case and offered a sealed record along with a light sentence of 16 months to 4 years in jail if Reyes plead guilty to manslaughter. “Although the horrific consequence, not heeding to the police orders to pull over, are grave … weighing in all the factors I do think youthful offender treatment is appropriate,” Carro said.

32 year old Brooklyn pedestrian dies after being struck by a hit and run driver

A speeding hit and run driver killed a Brooklyn pedestrian who was crossing the street to pick up his car after coming out of a bar on Saturday around 2:45 am.32 year old. Bryan Loughan had just stepped out of the the Gather Inn Again bar in Gerritsen Beach when according to the New York Daily News a white Chrysler minivan speeding south on Gerristsen Ave veered across the yellow line and hit the young man. The impact was so strong that the man landed a few yards away in a grassy area near the street. He was rushed to the hospital but he couldn’t be saved. The driver of the minivan, 50 year old Michael Casale, was apprehended by the police later on and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.

To prevent traffic crashes and protect pedestrians and bicyclists from personal injury and death, the New York State Senate passed a bill to lower the speed limit to 25 mph in New York City

A major step in Vision Zero plan to reduce the number of injury and death related to traffic accidents in New York City has been achieved this week. Albany just granted Bill deBlasio the authority to reduce the maximum speed limit from 30 mph to 25mph in all 5 boroughs of New York City.

To prevent deadly car accidents in school areas the NYC DOT is installing speed bumps near 3 lower Manhattan schools

In New York City, being struck by a vehicle is the leading cause of injury related death for children under 14 years old. Speeding drivers in school areas are of particular concern. As part of the Vision Zero program to improve traffic safety, the City of New York has been working on various initiatives to protect children form being struck by cars in school zones. One of the latest initiative announced by the the NYC DOT is the addition of speed bumps near 3 schools in lower Manhattan.

The bumps will be installed behind Battery Park City’s P.S./I.S. 276, on Little West Street, between First and Second places; in front of the Lower East Side’s P.S. 2, at Pike and Rutgers streets; and in front of Chinatown’s P.S. 124, on Division Street between Bowery and Market Street.

Elderly pedestrian suffered serious personal injury after being struck by a Tour Bus in Greenwich Village, Manhattan

A 74 year old woman was dragged under a tour bus yesterday in New York and suffered critical injuries to her head and legs. The woman was crossing Seventh Ave at 14th Street when a CitySights NY tour bus struck her while turning =South onto Seventh Ave.

This is the second time this year that a pedestrian was struck by a tour bus. Last January, Alexander Shear, 73, died after being struck by a Tour Bus on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (see previous blog)

A cyclist and a pedestrian died in two separate car accidents on N. Conduit Ave in Queens, NYC, during the week-end

A 58 year old cyclist died after he was struck by a hit and run driver on North Conduit Ave in Queens this week-end. A few hours later a pedestrian was struck by a car on the same avenue a few miles away and died from his injuries at the hospital.

The first accident happened near the dangerous intersection of 225 Street and N. Conduit. According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months 130 people were involved in 61 collisions and 14 of them suffered personal injury at this intersection. 2 pedestrians, 1 cyclist, 9 passengers and 11 vehicle drivers were among the 14 injured.

According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months, 64 collisions happened at this intersection. 148 people were involved. 1 pedestrian, 1 cyclist, 15 passengers and 12 drivers suffered personal injury.

Since the beginning of the year 39 pedestrians and 3 cyclists died in traffic accidents compared to respectively 55 and 1 during the first four months of 2013

According to the recently released NYPD motor vehicle collisions report, there were a total of 16,265 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in April compared to 15,796 in March and 16,412 in April 2013. For the first four months of the year the total number of accidents in NYC increased to 64,341 compared to 62,850 in 2013.

A total of 21 people died in traffic accidents in April compared to 15 in 2013.

Looking at the first 4 months of the year, the number of people dying in a crash is slightly lower in 2014 with 72 deaths compared to 84 deaths in 2013. For the last 3 months, this number is 51 in 2014 compared to 56 in 2013.

One pedestrian died and another suffered catastrophic personal injury after both being struck by a car in two separate accidents in dangerous Brooklyn intersections this Saturday

A 63 year old woman died and a 58 year old man is in critical condition after both were involved in two separate car accidents in Brooklyn, NYC, this week-end. The first accident happened at the intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N. Two cars collided and went spinning through the intersection. One of them hit 63 year old Galina Truglio who was walking in the crosswalk before hitting another car. Galina Ruglio was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N is a very dangerous intersection. According to NYC Crashmapper there were 46 collisions over the last 31 months at this intersection. 4 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, one passenger and one driver suffered personal injuries at this location during the last 31 months.
