A 74 year old woman was dragged under a tour bus yesterday in New York and suffered critical injuries to her head and legs. The woman was crossing Seventh Ave at 14th Street when a CitySights NY tour bus struck her while turning =South onto Seventh Ave.

This is the second time this year that a pedestrian was struck by a tour bus. Last January, Alexander Shear, 73, died after being struck by a Tour Bus on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (see previous blog)

A 58 year old cyclist died after he was struck by a hit and run driver on North Conduit Ave in Queens this week-end. A few hours later a pedestrian was struck by a car on the same avenue a few miles away and died from his injuries at the hospital.

The first accident happened near the dangerous intersection of 225 Street and N. Conduit. According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months 130 people were involved in 61 collisions and 14 of them suffered personal injury at this intersection. 2 pedestrians, 1 cyclist, 9 passengers and 11 vehicle drivers were among the 14 injured.

According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months, 64 collisions happened at this intersection. 148 people were involved. 1 pedestrian, 1 cyclist, 15 passengers and 12 drivers suffered personal injury.

According to the recently released NYPD motor vehicle collisions report, there were a total of 16,265 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in April compared to 15,796 in March and 16,412 in April 2013. For the first four months of the year the total number of accidents in NYC increased to 64,341 compared to 62,850 in 2013.

Looking at the first 4 months of the year, the number of people dying in a crash is slightly lower in 2014 with 72 deaths compared to 84 deaths in 2013. For the last 3 months, this number is 51 in 2014 compared to 56 in 2013.

A 63 year old woman died and a 58 year old man is in critical condition after both were involved in two separate car accidents in Brooklyn, NYC, this week-end. The first accident happened at the intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N. Two cars collided and went spinning through the intersection. One of them hit 63 year old Galina Truglio who was walking in the crosswalk before hitting another car. Galina Ruglio was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N is a very dangerous intersection. According to NYC Crashmapper there were 46 collisions over the last 31 months at this intersection. 4 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, one passenger and one driver suffered personal injuries at this location during the last 31 months.

As part of the Vision Zero Initiative to reduce pedestrian deaths, the NYPD led a two-day crackdown on speeding in New York City. The police issued a total of 4814 tickets: 1249 in Brooklyn, 1219 in Queens, 1175 in Manhattan, 782 in the Bronx and 389 in Staten Island.

As part of the Vision Zero Initiative to reduce deaths and injuries related to traffic accidents, New York police officers gave out more than 1000 summonses including 500 for failure to yield to pedestrian between May 5th and May 10th at a dangerous Queens intersection located near 74th street, Roosevelt Ave and Broadway.

The location was selected by the city because it has a history of accident. Last February a 25 year old woman was struck to death by a MTA bus at this intersection.

A pedestrian was knocked unconscious by a hit and run driver on a Queens sidewalk yesterday night. A security camera from a nearby restaurant captured the hit and run. Police say a white sedan drove up onto the sidewalk while going westbound on 30th Avenue in Astoria, then plowed into the victim at 45th Street at about 4 a.m. Saturday. The driver sped away. The police are still looking for him.

31 pedestrians, 10 bicyclists and 70 motor vehicle occupants suffered personal injury between 2007 and 2011 after they were involved in a traffic accident on Morningside Avenue between W 166th and W 126th street. Speeding is a main concern with 58% of northbound vehicles and 66% of southbound vehicles speeding according to a recent speed survey.

Last week after nine months of stalled deliberation, Community Board 10’s Transportation Committee accepted a proposal by the NYC Department of Transportation to make the dangerous corridor safer. The DOT proposed the reduction of four traffic lines to three on Morning Side Ave between 116th street and 126th street.

As part of the Vision Zero plan to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries, NYC DOT, NYPD, Congressman Nadler, Borough President Brewer, Council Members Rodriguez and Rosenthal announced yesterday that the dangerous intersection of Broadway and 96th Street in the Upper West Side of New York will be revamped.

The project simplifies signal timing, eliminates two left turns at the intersection, adds pedestrian space, enhances access and safety by reducing pedestrian crossing distances and creates a signalized crosswalk across West 96th Street between the two median malls at this busy transit connection.

A female pedestrian was fatally struck by a school bus with several children on board at the crossing of 93rd street and Second Ave yesterday afternoon. The victim is Jessica Schnieder, a woman in her 40s who was crossing 93rd Street. According to CBS New York, there were a lot of construction going on near the cross street and the bus started to back up because of traffic. The bus struck the woman as she was walking in the crossroad. She died at the scene of severe head trauma. See video for more
