A construction worker suffered fatal injury on Governor’s Island, New York. He and his son were standing next to a forklift that was unloading a heavy sewer pipe when a strap securing it broke. The 6000 pound pipe crushed the man to death in front of his son.

Horrible drowning accident in Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn New York demonstrates how important it is for swimmers and non swimmers to follow basic safety rules and wear a life jacket while involved in water activities.
The pair was riding a single person jetski without life jackets when the woman who didn’t know how to swim was ejected from the machine. The man who was a good swimmer jumped after her to try to save her but they both disappeared in the water. NYPD is still searching for the bodies. What a tragedy…

Delay to treat or Failure to diagnose Sepsis may lead to the loss of multiple organs and ultimately to death. Every year 500,000 Americans will be hospitalized because they suffer from severe Sepsis and 250,000 will die from it. Sepsis is a condition that is usually triggered by a bacterial infection of the bloodstream. Early diagnosis is key to preventing mortality. Thanks to a new automated diagnostic test developed by a team of researchers led by Nathan Ledeboer from the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), USA, sepsis could be diagnosed much faster and many lives could be saved.
The study is published this week in PLOS Medicine.
Car accidents related to tire aging kill 90 people and injure 3200 every year. 9% of all car crashes are due to tire related issues according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
As summer season is starting, the NHTSA is urging motorists to check their tires as hot weather and under-inflated or worn down tires are a dangerous mix on the road.

Pablo Villablanca, M.D., chief of diagnostic neuroradiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. The study also demonstrates that Aneurysm growth, size, and smoking were associated with increased rupture risk.
30,000 Americans each year suffer ruptured brain aneurysms and 40% of them die. Among the survivors, two-thirds suffer permanent neurological damage. A cerebral aneurysm is a growth in a blood vessel in the brain. If it breaks, blood is leaked into or around the brain, which can cause brain damage or death.
After a spinal cord injury, the assumption that it takes years for degenerative changes in the spinal cord and the brain to happen is incorrect. A study from the University of Zurich, Uniklinik Balgrist, and University College London (UCL), demonstrates that anatomical changes in the spinal cord and brain above the injury site may occur within 40 days of acute spinal cord injury.
The researchers followed 13 patients with acute spinal cord injuries and used a new type of neuroimaging protocol that can measure the extent of tissue loss in the spinal cord and the brain. Because they can display the effects of spinal cord injury treatments on the central nervous system, new neuroimaging protocols will also be extremely valuable in clinical trials of new treatments.

With this concept in mind, Dr Robert Isler, PhD, an associate professor of Psychology at The University of Waikato in New Zealand, created eDrive, an online interactive driver training program that takes drivers on a trip through New Zealand while teaching them specific driving skills.

Vordonia Contracting and Supplies Corp./Alma Realty Corp. of Long Island City, MSI of Brooklyn, and North Eastern Precast of Fultonville allowed employees to work dangerously close to high-voltage power lines despite multiple cease and desist notices from the Long Island Power Authority.
Contractors were working on a residential and retail project at the corner of Sunrise Highway and Rockaway Avenue in Valley Stream, Long Island, New York. According to OSHA inspectors, in some areas of the construction site, power lines were just 4 inches above the head of the workers and they have been fortunate not to have been electrocuted.
The 3 contractors were issued willful citations for allowing employees and crane operations in close proximity to the power lines and serious citations for failing to mark the power lines with warning signs. Additional violations were issued for failing to train workers on electrocution hazards, not checking to see whether the lines were energized and unsafe crane operating procedures.
If porches and decks are not maintained properly the weather changes and the exposure to elements can put them at risk of collapse and proprety owners can be held responsible for personal injury that may occur in the event of an accident . For this reason the NYC Building department just launched its annual no-penalty deck and porch inspection program.
New Yorkers who own a property can call 311 during the entire month of July to ask for a free inspection. Inspectors will make sure that deck and porches are structurally sound and will look for cracks, rotting, failed connections or any other signs that could lead to a collapse.
A boozed up 20 year old driver was going 120 mph when he lost control of his car and slammed into the guardrail on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, New York early Saturday. Two of the passengers died and two others suffered injury and were taken to the hospital. The driver suffered minor injuries and was booked for several charges including manslaughter, assault and criminally negligent homicide according to the New York Daily News
