Dozens of personal injuries suffered by New York construction workers during accidents at the World Trade Center site have not been reported

Freedoom%20Tower.JPG 34 serious personal injuries suffered by workers during construction accidents at the New York Fredoom Tower have not been reported to OSHA according to a NY Daily News investigation that came out Yesterday. Some of the non reported accidents left workers with spinal fractuers, broken limbs and fractured hips.

The study also mentions that for 3 years in a row the injury rates at the WTC were higher than the New York State and the National average rates.

Among the non reported accidents at the New York construction site, the study mentions a worker struck in the head by a 60 pound bundle of rebar, a worker who fell 20 feet after the collapse of a scaffold and another worker struck by a large steel plate.

21% of fatal car accidents are related to driver fatigue

Drowsy%20driving.jpg Drowsy driving plays a role in 21 % of fatal car accidents, in 13% of the crashes resulting in hospitalization and in 7% of the accidents requiring treatment for personal injuries according to a new report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The report based on a representative sample of 14,268 crashes demonstrate that drowsy driving is a serious traffic safety issue and that official statistics from the NHTSA do not provide an accurate picture of the prevalence of the probleme

Two construction workers prepping for asbestos removal from a government building were injured when a part of a ceiling fell off in Mineola, Long Island, NY

Two New York construction workers got trapped in dangerous asbestos debris and suffered personal injury after a ceiling collapsed and a 30×50 piece of concrete with metal reinforcing rods fell on them. The two workers were part of a crew of 19 people prepping the old Social Services building in Mineola for asbestos removal when the accident happened. The 17 other workers had to be decontaminated for asbestos. See video below

Since the beginning of the year the total number of traffic fatalities in NYC is down by 5.6% with pedestrian deaths down by 16.6% compared to 2013 however the number of cyclists dying in accidents has more than doubled during the same period of time

167 people, including 80 pedestrians, 15 cyclists, 17 vehicle passengers and 55 motorists died in traffic accidents in New York City between the beginning of January and the end of August 2013 compared to a total of 177 including 96 pedestrians, 7 cyclists, 18 vehicle passengers and 56 motorists for the same period of time in 2013. The number of motorists and passengers vehicle deaths is stable while pedestrian deaths have been declining following some intense Zero Vision campaigning. However not everything looks good in this picture: the number of cyclists dying in traffic accidents more than doubled during that time.

New York ATV accident left one man dead and another one injured

A man driving his ATV in the Bronx, NYC died in the hospital after he was inadvertently rear ended by his friend who was also driving an ATV. None of the two men were wearing a helmet when the accident happened. The friend who suffered a leg injury was charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving and was issued violations for unregistered reckless driving, riding without an authorized helmet, and for having no insurance. 6 people were seriously injured in an accident during which a truck crashed into a bagel store in Queens, NYC

5 adults and an infant suffered severe personal injury after the driver of a box truck lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a bagel store located at the corner of 76th road and Queens Boulevard. The truck went almost entirely into the bagel shop. The truck accident happened yesterday morning around 10:00 am as customers were eating breakfast at “Bagels for You”. A witness who was sitting at a bus stop across the street believed the accident was intentional. He saw the truck driving very slowly and all of sudden driving up the curb and aiming right toward the store. The driver remained at the scene and the police say that so far they don’t suspect any criminal intent. The investigation is still ongoing.

A pedestrian was seriously injured by a taxi that jumped the curb in Uptown Manhattan

A pedestrian suffered personal injury after he was hit by a yellow cab on the sidewalk on East 59th Street near Madison Ave in New York yesterday around lunch time. The cab driver lost control of his vehicle, jumped the curb and hit the man before crashing into a building. According to witnesses the cab driver was trying to avoid a cyclist before the accident happened.

Brooklyn pedestrian suffers severe head injuries in car accident

A 52 year old man was in critical condition after he was struck by a car on Pitkin Ave near Berriman Street in Brooklyn, NYC on Saturday Afternoon. According to the police, the man was crossing against the light in the pedestrian crosswalk when he was struck by a 68 year old woman driving a Mecedes SUV.

A woman who ran in the street in Brooklyn to try to save her dog that had been run over by a car was struck by another car. The dog died and the 31 year old woman is in critical condition. Both drivers fled and the police are still looking for them.

Kristin Rendina was walking her two dogs when one of them was hit by a car that didn’t stop on W. Second St. near Avenue Z in Gravesend. She ran from the sidewalk to kneel by the dog and was struck by a black Jeep Wrangler driving on Avenue Z whose driver fled the scene.

NYPD cop injured in another case of a pedestrian being struck by a bicyclist in New York City

A few weeks after a woman died after being struck by a bike in Central Park, NYC, a NYPD officer was struck by a bicyclist yesterday on the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian footpath. The officer suffered personal injury and appeared to haver a broken arm. The accident happened yesterday afternoon on a crowded path. According to the New York police, the cyclist was not arrested.
