Today on Twitter join a chat on sports-related head injuries in children

Recent research has demonstrated that concussions and head injuries in young athletes are even more dangerous than previously thought. Today between 1pm and 2 pm EST, a panel of researchers, athletes, doctors and public advocates will participate in a Twitter Chat on sports-related head injuries in children, tweeting under the handle @safetymd. The chat is hosted by Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma (@injuredkids) in partnership with Richard Childress Racing. Anybody is welcome to join and share their #HelmetSelfie.

A boy and his dad who were injured in the Harlem gas explosion say thank you to the rescuers, doctors, neighbors and strangers who helped them

16 year old Oscar Hernandez suffered severe personal injury and his mother and sister died in the Harlem gas explosion that destroyed a building on E. 116th street in Harlem, NYC on March 12th this year. The young man spent 11 days in a coma and when he came out of the coma, he needed several surgeries that kept him in the hospital until June 27th. Oscar, his dad and his little sister are the only members of the family who survived the gas explosion. On Thanksgiving all three are happy to be alive and thank all the people who helped them.

A young woman who was driving under the influence of alcohol was critically injured in a car accident in Brooklyn NYC during the Thanksgiving week-end

22 year old Irina Danilyuk was hospitalized in critical condition after her car burst into fire following an accident during which she first hit a car and then a tree while driving drunk on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, NYC. The young woman suffers from multiple injuries including cuts to her head, burns on her back and legs as well as internal injuries. The car accident happened early Saturday morning around 3:45. In another incident of drunk driving, the Staten Island police found a drunk driver asleep at the wheel with an open can of beer in his cup holder in the middle of traffic on the West Shore Expressway (Read more in the Staten Island Live)

Over the year statistics show that accidents related to drunk driving always increase during the long Thanksgiving week-end and also during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day so please drive safely!

A case against a male nurse who alledgelly raped a 64 year old woman with dementia in a NYC nursing home was adjourned for the sixth time

Last February a 64 year old patient from a nursing home in the Bronx, NY, was allegedly raped by a a nurse. The victim suffered from dementia and couldn’t speak because of a previous stroke. The abuse happened at the Manhattan Healthcare Center in Marble Hill in the Bronx, NYC. The nurse, 42 year old Nanic Aidasani, was caught in the act by an aid who walked into the room of the patient and found him on the top of the victim.

The family of the woman was back in the courtroom yesterday after the case had already been adjourned five times. They were extremely disappointed to hear that their case had to be adjourned for the sixth time as the lawyer for the alleged rapist is now calling for a psychological evaluation of the nurse. Among the people who came to support the family was NY State Senator Ruben Diaz. The Senator and the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization held a prayer vigil to support the family and friends of the victim.

To prevent fatal bicycle accidents in Central Park, the City cut the speed limit to 20 mph instead of 25

After a pedestrian was killed by a reckless cyclist in Central Park a few months ago, the city decided to lower the speed limit to 20 mph from 25 mph in Central Park. Signs will be installed in the next few days and the new speed limit will be in effect immediately after their installation is completed.

A mom was severely injured and her 18 year old daughter was critcally injured in a car accident caused by a driver fleeing from the police in Marine Park, Brooklyn, NYC

A van driver who was fleeing from the police crashed into a car occupied by 50 year old Nancy Lawrence and her 18 year old daughter. The mother was seriously injured while the daughter who was sitting in the passenger seat, is in critical condition. The accident happened yesterday in the middle of the afternoon at the Intersection of Avenue U and Stuart Street in Marine Park, Brooklyn, NYC. The police had previously tried to stop the van driver on Flatbush Ave but he drove over one of the cop’s foot, clipped another one and sped off. The police officers then jumped in their cars and pursued the van driver until Marine Park where the accident happened. The Van driver tried to run away from the accident but was apprehended.

A man died last night in a massive truck accident during which 3 tractor trailers caught fire on the NJ Turnpike

A man died in a fiery truck accident involving 3 tractor trailers on the New Jersey turnpike last night.

All 3 tractor trailers were traveling in the same direction when one of the truck drivers lost control of his vehicle causing a crash with two other trucks. All 3 tractor trailers caught fire.

The police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

One man died and 14 other people suffered serious personal injury in a huge fire that destroyed apartments on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn, NYC, early this morning

A young man is dead and 14 other people are injured including several of them in critical condition after a massive fire destroyed apartments in a three-story building on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn, NYC early this morning. The fire broke out above the stores and destroyed all the apartments. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident.

Since the beginning of the year the number of people injured in traffic accidents gradually declined in New York City … Are the recent traffic calming measures implemented by Bloomberg and de Blasio more helpful in reducing injuries than deaths?

Personal injuries related to traffic accidents in NYC gradually declined so far this year compared to last year while deaths related to traffic accidents were mostly stable as analyzed in our previous blog. Pedestrian injuries have significantly decreased over the summer while bicycle accident injuries stayed stable.

The graph below shows the total number of people injured in traffic crashes over a 3 month period with numbers for 2013 in blue and numbers for 2014 in red.

The number of pedestrian injuries slightly decreased at the end of the winter and during the spring of 2014 compared to the same periods of 2013. The decline continued over the summer and the total number of pedestrian injuries over a 3 month period was below 2300 for the first time during the two years under review.

A motorsports manufacturer which allegedly failed to report defective minibikes and go-carts recently agreed to pay a $4.3 million civil penalty

Baja%20Motorsports%20mini-bike1.jpg Baja Motorsports knowingly failed to report immediately defects and an unreasonable risk of serious injury involving 11 models of minibikes and go-carts said the Consumer Product Safety Commission in charges that were resolved by a settlement reached recently between the two parties.

The defective minibikes and go-carts were sold by Baja Inc., and its corporate affiliate, One World Technologies Inc., of Anderson, S.C. in the United States from 2004 to 2010. During that period of time Baja received several reports that people had been injured, including a child who was severely burned, after the gas cap leaked or detached from the fuel tank. Baja also received reports of stuck throttles. The CPSC charged that the the throttle could stick, due to an improperly positioned fuel line and throttle cable, posing a sudden acceleration hazard. The company didn’t file a full report with the CPSC until June 2010.
