Fatal Bronx intersectionAn 80-year-old Bronx resident, Rose Young, was fatally struck last Thursday while crossing the intersection of Holland Avenue and Allerton Avenue in the Allerton neighborhood. According to police, Ms. Young was walking through the crosswalk when a 56-year-old driver operating a 2005 Honda Odyssey made a left turn from northbound Holland Avenue onto Allerton Avenue and hit her.

Emergency Medical Services transported Ms. Young to Jacobi Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver remained at the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Ms. Young lived only two blocks from where she was struck. For many Bronx families, this proximity underscores the devastating reality that serious and fatal collisions often occur directly within the communities where residents walk every day.

Photos of the site show the so-called “bike lane” blending directly onto the pedestrian sidewalk without any pavement markings, creating a hazardous environment for people stepping off the bus.

According to police, the 86-year-old driver of a red Chrysler Town & Country minivan may have suffered a stroke before reversing onto the sidewalk near West Fifth Street and Neptune Avenue around 12:51 p.m. The vehicle struck three women standing near a flower bed outside 486 Neptune Avenue.

Witnesses described an emotional scene as paramedics performed CPR on the elderly victim while others comforted the injured women. All three were taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where the 89-year-old was pronounced dead. The 75-year-old and 43-year-old victims were listed in stable condition. The driver remained at the scene and was later hospitalized.

Avenue-V-and-Ocean-Brooklyn-where-the-young-pedestrian-was-injuredAn 11-year-old pedestrian was struck and critically injured Monday evening in Gravesend, Brooklyn, by the driver of a black Acura sedan who fled the scene, according to police reports. The hit-and-run occurred around 5:50 p.m. near Avenue V and Ocean Parkway, an intersection known for heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene.
“I heard the crash. I saw the boy laying flat on the street not moving,” said Renee Beyda, 60, who witnessed the impact. Debris from the crash also injured a 25-year-old man, who suffered leg injuries and was heard screaming in pain as bystanders rushed to help.

Both victims were transported by EMS to Maimonides Medical Center. The boy remains in critical condition, while the 25-year-old is reportedly in stable condition.

A pedestrian was fatally struck in the early hours of Saturday morning in Brooklyn, in yet another tragic reminder of the dangers that pedestrians face on New York City streets. The fatal hit-and-run occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Suydam Street, on the border of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick, around 3:45 a.m.

According to the NYPD, the 47-year-old man was crossing the street when he was hit by a vehicle traveling north on Broadway. The driver fled the scene, leaving the victim to die in the roadway. Police responding to the scene found the man deceased.
