One man died and another one was critically injured in car accident in Queens, New York City. Monday early morning, 30 year old Jorge Bermudez was driving his car on Laurel Hill Blvd with a passenger at his side. As he was near 49th street just under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Maspeth, he lost control of the vehicle. The car slammed into a median and both the driver and the passenger got pinned inside. Witnesses reported that the crash was very loud. The victims were rushed to the hospital where Bermudez died. Read more in the NY Daily News

A pedestrian died and two others sustained personal injury including a toddler who was in critical condition after an out of control driver jumped the curb in Queens, NYC. The accident happened on Monday at the corner of Atlantic Ave and 108th Street. A 43 year old woman driving an SUV ran a red light and collided with another car. The impact send the SUV careening onto the sidewalk. The SUV hit two woman in their 50s and a two year old girl. One of the woman died of her injuries while the other one is still being treated for her injury at the hospital. The toddler is in critical but stable condition. A young man was seriously injured after being struck by a car in New York City a little bit before 10:00 pm yesterday night. The pedestrian was crossing Union Turnpike near Woodhaven Blvd, in Forest Hills, Queens, when he was hit by the negligent driver. According to a witness, the car didn’t break and struck the pedestrian at full speed. The impact was so hard that the pedestrian went flying against a metallic dumpster at the corner of the street. The  didn’t stop and fled the scene. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Read more in the NY Daily News

A year ago, a participant at a Vision Zero Queens South workshop pinpointed the dangerous intersection of Union Turnpike and Woodhaven Blvd (see picture below). Forrest Hill residents consider Union Turnpike very unsafe for both pedestrians and bicyclists. Last year the speed limit was lowered to 25 mph and this summer the police cracked down on speeding drivers to try to prevent accidents such as the one that happened yesterday night.

Aron Aranbayev and Chloe KardashianIn a previous blog we described how a driver in an act of road rage ran over a pedestrian in Queens and killed him.  The driver has been identified as 46 year old Charles Jordan of Valley Stream, NY, a MTA train operator.  Jordan is facing murder and leaving the scene of an accident charges after the July 19th road rage incident that led to the death of jeweler to the stars Aron Aranbayev (picture here with Khloe Kardashian). A 17 year old driver crashed his car into a SUV last night in New York City. The front passenger of the car died while the back passenger suffered personal injury . Both drivers were also injured. The teen was driving north on 231 St with two other teen passengers when he crashed into a SUV driven by a 20 year old man at 119th Av in Cambria Heights, Queens, NYC. Read more in the NY Daily News

Every day an average of 12 people are killed or are hospitalized because of a collision caused by a teen driver. Newly licensed male teen drivers as well as their teen passengers are the most at risk of being killed or injured in a car accident with unsafe speed being the leading cause of teen crashes. Two pedestrians were seriously injured in an accident between a car and a truck in Queens, NYC, on Tuesday.  Two women, ages 47 and 50, were walking on a sidewalk near the intersection of Northern Blvd and 162nd St. in Murray Hill when a SUV was struck by a Long Island Jewish Hospital truck while turning from Northern Blvd onto 162nd St. The SUV jumped the curb and hit the two women. One of them was pinned under the car and her head smashed on the ground. The two women were taken to the hospital. They were seriously injured but in stable condition. Read more in the NY Daily News

A 90 year old woman lost control of her car and crashed into the front window of the Aeropostale clothing store of the Bay Terrace shopping Center on Bell Blvd in Queens, NY. The accident happened on Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m. The driver who pressed the gas pedal by mistake, drove through the shop front window and ended up next to the cash register. A 39 year old worker suffered minor personal injury from falling glass and the elderly driver reported pain in her left arm. Read more in the NY Daily News

In New York State, the Department of Motor Vehicles does’t remove driving privileges based on age but an elderly driver may be requested to pass a re-evaluation program. New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law Section 506 (1) states that: “If the Commissioner has “reasonable grounds” to believe that a person holding a license is not qualified to drive a motor vehicle, the Commissioner may require such person to submit to an examination to determine their qualifications.”

If you have an elderly parent or close relative who you feel no longer has the ability to drive safely it is incumbent on you to discuss with them your concerns. This is a very difficult discussion to have since giving up one’s driving privileges makes one feel a loss of independence. Such a discussion must be in a reasoned manner. Heat map Cross Bay Blvd and Liberty AveAn 88 year old woman was killed in  a car accident in Queens, New York. The woman was driving North on Cross Bay Blvd at Liberty Ave when she hit a pillar of the elevated A line subway train tracks.  She suffered critical injuries and died 4 days later at the Hospital. The Police are still investigating the cause of the crash. The NYC Crash mapper heat map shows that the area is a dangerous spot where many accidents have occurred in the past. Between August 2011 and February 2014 44 collisions happened there and 5 pedestrians, 1 cyclist 4 passengers and 5 drivers suffered personal injury.

A woman in her 2o’s was crossing the street at the intersection of 76th Street and Woodisde in Queens, New York City, on Sunday night when she was struck and killed by  the driver of a box truck. The driver of the truck hit the victim as he was turning onto Woodside Avenue but he didn’t stop. He drove away leaving the woman to die in the street. A witness at the scene followed the box truck for a few blocks, stopped the driver and managed to hold him until the police arrived. The police arrested the driver, 27 year old Valentine Gonzalez and  charged him with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving without a license. Earlier in the day in Queens another woman was struck by a hit and run driver (see previous post)

A 63 year old woman suffered serious personal injury after she was hit by a hit and run driver who is still at large. The accident happened Sunday morning at 89th Avenue and 120th street in Queens, NYC.  The driver hit the pedestrian at 89th Avenue and 120th Street in Queens, and sped off on 89th Ave. The police are still looking for the  driver and have released the below video. The vehicle is a dark gray Nissan Pathfinder. The victim was taken to the hospital where she is in serious condition.
