To prevent traffic crashes and protect pedestrians and bicyclists from personal injury and death, the New York State Senate passed a bill to lower the speed limit to 25 mph in New York City

A major step in Vision Zero plan to reduce the number of injury and death related to traffic accidents in New York City has been achieved this week. Albany just granted Bill deBlasio the authority to reduce the maximum speed limit from 30 mph to 25mph in all 5 boroughs of New York City.

8 people suffer personal injury in an accident between a car and a garbage truck in Brooklyn, NYC

A garbage truck tried to avoid a car which had run a red light and crashed into an open deli injuring 8 people last week in Brooklyn. The accident happened at the intersection of Dekalb Ave and Bedford Ave. The driver of the Metropolitan Recycling garbage truck had the green light and was driving through the intersection when he tried to avoid a black sedan which had ran the red light. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed into an open Deli located at the corner of the intersection. The deli belongs and is operated by a family who lives in the apartment above it. Two of the family members were working in the Deli while the rest of the family was asleep just above the bodega. 8 people were injured in the accident including the two drivers. The deli and the building are severely damaged.

To prevent deadly car accidents in school areas the NYC DOT is installing speed bumps near 3 lower Manhattan schools

In New York City, being struck by a vehicle is the leading cause of injury related death for children under 14 years old. Speeding drivers in school areas are of particular concern. As part of the Vision Zero program to improve traffic safety, the City of New York has been working on various initiatives to protect children form being struck by cars in school zones. One of the latest initiative announced by the the NYC DOT is the addition of speed bumps near 3 schools in lower Manhattan.

The bumps will be installed behind Battery Park City’s P.S./I.S. 276, on Little West Street, between First and Second places; in front of the Lower East Side’s P.S. 2, at Pike and Rutgers streets; and in front of Chinatown’s P.S. 124, on Division Street between Bowery and Market Street.

A cyclist and a pedestrian died in two separate car accidents on N. Conduit Ave in Queens, NYC, during the week-end

A 58 year old cyclist died after he was struck by a hit and run driver on North Conduit Ave in Queens this week-end. A few hours later a pedestrian was struck by a car on the same avenue a few miles away and died from his injuries at the hospital.

The first accident happened near the dangerous intersection of 225 Street and N. Conduit. According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months 130 people were involved in 61 collisions and 14 of them suffered personal injury at this intersection. 2 pedestrians, 1 cyclist, 9 passengers and 11 vehicle drivers were among the 14 injured.

According to NYC Crashmapper, over the last 31 months, 64 collisions happened at this intersection. 148 people were involved. 1 pedestrian, 1 cyclist, 15 passengers and 12 drivers suffered personal injury.

Since the beginning of the year 39 pedestrians and 3 cyclists died in traffic accidents compared to respectively 55 and 1 during the first four months of 2013

According to the recently released NYPD motor vehicle collisions report, there were a total of 16,265 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in April compared to 15,796 in March and 16,412 in April 2013. For the first four months of the year the total number of accidents in NYC increased to 64,341 compared to 62,850 in 2013.

A total of 21 people died in traffic accidents in April compared to 15 in 2013.

Looking at the first 4 months of the year, the number of people dying in a crash is slightly lower in 2014 with 72 deaths compared to 84 deaths in 2013. For the last 3 months, this number is 51 in 2014 compared to 56 in 2013.

One pedestrian died and another suffered catastrophic personal injury after both being struck by a car in two separate accidents in dangerous Brooklyn intersections this Saturday

A 63 year old woman died and a 58 year old man is in critical condition after both were involved in two separate car accidents in Brooklyn, NYC, this week-end. The first accident happened at the intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N. Two cars collided and went spinning through the intersection. One of them hit 63 year old Galina Truglio who was walking in the crosswalk before hitting another car. Galina Ruglio was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Intersection of Coney Island Ave and Avenue N is a very dangerous intersection. According to NYC Crashmapper there were 46 collisions over the last 31 months at this intersection. 4 pedestrians, 2 cyclists, one passenger and one driver suffered personal injuries at this location during the last 31 months.

The New York City Council passed 11 bills aimed at reducing the number of deaths and personal injuries related to traffic accidents

The City Council just passed 11 traffic safety bills to crack down on reckless drivers and reduce accidents related to traffic violence. Drivers who fail to yield to a pedestrian or a cyclist will be punished by a penalty of $50 to $250 and up to 15 days in jail. Drivers who hit a pedestrian or a cyclist who has the right of way will be criminally charged and punished by up to $500 in fines and 30 days in jail. Cab drivers who injure or kill someone while committing a traffic violation will have their license immediately suspended. Stunt behaviors by motorcyclists such as wheelies and donuts will be prohibited.

To prevent motorists from speeding and reduce the number of car accidents, the city of New York is considering warning signs for speed cameras

Previous studies have shown that warning signs for speed cameras help slow down speeding drivers and the city of New York is looking at this option according to the Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

Today there are only 20 speed cameras in the city but a recent legislation was passed to add 200 more speed cameras in the city and in Long Island.

Currently, the locations of existing cameras have not been released and warning signs don’t publicize them. Adding to that the current legislation that expands the camera program specifically excuses the use of warning signs for future camera installations.

The NYPD ticketed more than 1000 drivers in 5 days at a dangerous Queens intersection where a young woman recently died after being struck by a MTA bus

As part of the Vision Zero Initiative to reduce deaths and injuries related to traffic accidents, New York police officers gave out more than 1000 summonses including 500 for failure to yield to pedestrian between May 5th and May 10th at a dangerous Queens intersection located near 74th street, Roosevelt Ave and Broadway.

The location was selected by the city because it has a history of accident. Last February a 25 year old woman was struck to death by a MTA bus at this intersection.

The police started yesterday a two-day crackdown on speeding in NYC. Every month in New York there are approximately 250 traffic accidents related to unsafe speed. In their announcement the police say that drivers should adhere to newly created “arterial slow zones” and “school zones” throughout the city where speed limits are reduced to 25 and 20 miles per hour respectively. If they don’t, they could be fined anywhere between $90 and $600 and receive a 3 to 11 points on their license, police warned.
