776 pedestrians, 513 bicyclists, 1236 passengers and 1960 motorists suffered personal injury in motor vehicle accidents in New York City in September compared to respectively 714 pedestrians, 565 bicyclists, 1448 passengers and 2010 motorists in August and 751 pedestrians, 485 bicyclists, 1677 passengers and 1523 motorists in September 2014.

While the number of pedestrians injured in NYC traffic accidents  has been below 1000 since the beginning of 2014, the number of people injured in bicycle accidents stayed over 500 for the last 3 months. The number of motorists injured has also been unusually high and staying above 2000 for the last 3 months.

4 pedestrians, 2 bicyclists, 2 passengers and 6 motorists died in motor vehicle accidents in September compared to 11 pedestrians, 3 bicyclists, 2 passengers and 5 motorists in August and 13 pedestrians, 1 bicyclist, 4 passengers and 8 motorists in September 2014. The Vision Zero Initiative is having a positive impact. Since the beginning of the year, it is the fourth month that the total monthly traffic fatalities are below 15. In 2014 it happened only twice and in 2013 the monthly number of people dying on New York City Streets never went below 15.

Last Thursday an 84 year old woman was killed in a bus accident in Queens, NYC, and the driver just sped away. Earlier during the week another victim was killed by a hit and run bus driver in New York City (see previous blog). This particular accident happened at the busy intersection of Main Street and Kissena Boulevard in Flushing around 8:30 pm. 84 year old Aglaia Goularis was crossing the street when a white Skyliner charter bus that was on its way to Foxwoods Casino struck her. She suffered severe body trauma and was declared dead at the scene of the accident. The driver didn’t stop but he was later identified by the police. Read more in the New York Post.

An elderly pedestrian died in a bus accident in New York City. The 70 year old woman was crossing the street at the intersection of Sackman Street and Fulton Street around 6:15 am yeserday morning when she was struck by a MTA bus turning from Sackman Street onto Fulton Street.  The bus kept going and the victim was left on the road “cut in half” according to Ramon Garcia, a witness who tried to help her. She died at the scene of the accident.  The witness said the bus driver stopped briefly at the stop sign before making the turn and hit the woman who was using a walker.

Though the driver left the scene and may have violated the Right of Way Law, police “did not immediately suspect criminality.” The Right of Way Law makes it a misdemeanor for a driver to injure or kill someone who is walking or biking with the right of way. Read more in Street Blog

Two people who could have died in a school bus accident only suffered minor personal injury thanks to a courageous NYPD officer. Christopher Canale, a NYPD transit cop on the Far Rockaway train line was driving on the Long Island Expressway last Thursday with his family when a mini school bus crashed into a box truck and started to burn just in front of his car. Canale stopped on the side of the road and ran to the bus thinking it was full of children. He quickly realized that only two people were on on board: the bus driver and an aid stuck in the back.  The NYPD cop was first  able to get the aid out of the bus safely.  Then as the flames were threatening to burn the feet of the bus driver who was stuck between his seat and the steering wheel he was able to pull him out to safety just before the bus burst into fire. 12 people suffered minor injuries after a bus crashed into a building in New York City. The accident was caused by a drug dealer who was caught by the police with 64 bags of crack cocaine in his car.  Yesterday night around 9:30 pm the police pulled over 24 year old Chevron Parchement because he was not wearing a seat belt. The young man sped away and the police chased him. He ran  a red light and was T-boned by a bus which was traveling east on S. Conduit Road in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NYC. The impact of the collision was so strong that the bus swerved off the road , slammed into two parked cars and finally crashed into the side of a two-story house in which the owner was celebrating his birthday. Thankfully no one inside the house was injured. 12 bus passengers suffered minor personal injury and were taken to the hospital to be treated. A motorcyclist was critically injured and 10 other people suffered minor injury after a bus collided with a car in New York City last Wednesday. The accident happened at the intersection of Woodhaven Boulevard and 81st Road in Woodhaven, Queens. The bus that was transporting special needs adults collided with a Nissan Sedan. The impact was so hard that the bus rocked and almost tipped while the front of the Nissan sustained severe damage trapping the driver. Good Samaritans ran to him and tried to get him out of the car by breaking the windows. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Read more in the NY Daily News

There were 19,061 motor vehicle accidents in New York City in July 2015 compared to 19,428 the previous month. During the same month in 2014 and 2013 there were respectively 17,361 and 17,548 crashes.  For the last 3 months the number of  accidents was unusually high and stayed above 19,000. So far since the beginning of the year there were 123,697 traffic accidents in NYC compared to respectively 118,195 and 117,022 for the same period of 2014 and 2013.

4,776 people suffered personal injury in motor vehicle accidents in NYC in July compared to 4,795 the previous month and respectively 4,591 and 5,077 for July 2014 and July 2013. Even though the number of motor vehicle accidents was very high in the month of July the number of people injured in these accidents was lower in July 2015 than in July 2013 and almost the same as in July 2014.

The number of motorists injured in a vehicle accident in July 2015 was unusually high and above 2,000 for the first time over the last 3 years under review.

Nearly a dozen people were injured in a bus accident in New York City yesterday afternoon. The bus was traveling on the north bond bus lane of Woodhaven Boulevard when a SUV traveling in the same direction cut in front of it to make a right turn. The bus driver tried to avoid the SUV and swerved before to crash into the building located at the corner of 63rd Avenue. The building was partially destroyed and the wall of an apartment located on the second floor was teared down.  At the time of the accident, Colette Landers who resides in the apartment was inside. Thankfully she didn’t sustained any injury but she was shaken up.  She explained to CBS that she was about to take a shower when everything flew over in her apartment and the wall fell down.

Witnesses tried to help injured passengers to get out of the bus by the windows however they couldn’t get to the bus driver who was crushed in his seat. They had to wait for the emergency crews to take him out using the jaws of life. He was seriously injured and transported to the hospital with six other passengers who also suffered serious injury. Other passengers were treated on stretchers at the scene of the accident.

32 year old David Rodriguez died from injuries he sustained in an accident during which he was hit by a NYC MTA Bus as he was riding his bike 9 days ago. Rodriguez was biking east on Van Dike Street in Brooklyn, NYC, when he was struck by a MTA B57 Bus that was heading south on Dwight Street. The accident happened at night after 11:00 pm on July 29th.

Rodriguez was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Last Friday, 9 days later, he died from his injuries.

After the accident, the bus driver stayed at the scene and wasn’t charged.

A 54 year old woman died in a bus accident yesterday night. The bus was traveling from New York City to North Carolina when the bus driver, 23 year old Eric Jimmerson from New York, fell asleep near Benson North Carolina on Interstate 95. The bus crossed the median heading towards a car coming in the opposite direction. The driver of the car swerved, trying to avoid the bus and crashed into a tree. He was seriously injured and his wife who was in the passenger seat died in the accident. Their 12 and 13 year old children who were sitting in the back were also injured. The New York bus driver was in critical condition after he was ejected from the bus. He may face charges. Four other passengers on the bus suffered personal injury. Read more here
