84th street and York IntersectionTwo pedestrians were injured in car accidents at two dangerous intersections of the Upper East Side of Manhattan this week-end. Both accidents occurred after sunset. The first one took place at the intersection of 84th Street and York (see Google Map picture on the left) Saturday at 5:45 pm. A 76 year old lady who crossed the street against the light was struck by a car. She suffered broken bones in her face, leg and pelvis.  She was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The driver stayed at the scene of the accident and wasn’t charged. Since 2009, 7 pedestrians were injured in car accidents at this intersection.

The second accident took place at an even more dangerous intersection. 28 pedestrians were injured since 2009 at the intersection of East 86th Street and Third Ave. Another victim was hit by a car at this location on Sunday at 8:30 pm.

To prevent such accidents the city launched the Dusk and Darkness campaign to tell pedestrians and drivers about the higher risk of pedestrian accidents during the winter darkness. As part of this campaign The NYPD also increases enforcement against drivers speeding, failing to yield or being distracted while driving between 4:00 pm and 9:00 am.

fatal truck accident locationA woman was fatally struck by a truck in New York on Friday afternoon. The 57 year old pedestrian was crossing 39th Street and 10th Ave when she was hit by a truck. The truck driver was travelling North on 10th Ave and was making a left turn on 39th street (see picture) when the accident happened.  The driver identified as 28 year old Clyburn Rance stayed at the scene of the accident. He was later arrested by the police.  He was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to exercise due care, and failure to adhere to the highway law.

At the beginning of November, a campaign entitled “Dusk and Darkness” was launched in New York City to inform drivers and pedestrians about the increased risk of accidents during fall and winter darkness. During the 3 months following daylight saving time, twilight sets around 4:30 pm in New York City.  Between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm when most commuters are coming out of work, the streets are already dark. The risk of accidents increases as visibility decreases and a higher number of pedestrians hit the streets of New York City.  Recent statistics show that 6 out of 9 pedestrian accidents during the 3 months following daylight saving times occur after sunset.

The intersection of 10th Ave and 39th street is extremely busy on Friday around 5:00 pm as it is located next to the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey.

accident sceneMore Pedestrians and Bicyclists have been killed in car accidents in NYC at this point in 2016 than in 2015. Through November 20th 124 pedestrians have been killed. 17 bicyclists have also suffered fatal injuries. For the same time period in 2015 115 pedestrians were involved in fatal accidents and 14 bicyclists were killed. Interestingly the death rate for those in cars and on motorcycles decreased this year to 61. At this point last year the number of such deaths was 73. Brian Zumhagen of Transportation Alternatives commented that these statistics indicate that the Vision Zero project is not sufficiently protecting those who are most at risk and that the City needs to fix those areas which have already been classified as hazardous Vision Zero priority locations.   The stated mission of Transportation Alternatives is to promote bicycling, walking and public transit in NYC. On November 17, 2016, Orlando Savino was hit by a four door sedan while walking across Neried Avenue at its intersection with Richardson Avenue in the Bronx, NYC. The car accident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. The pedestrian was found unresponsive by the police. He was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center. Video at the scene depict the driver of a black Ford Fusion driving south on Richardson and turning left onto Neried where he hit Mr. Savino. A 59 year old man is in critical condition after he was struck by a car in New York City. The accident took place on Sunday around 5.20 pm. The pedestrian was crossing Ralph Ave at the intersection of Macon Street when a car hit him. The driver didn’t stop. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The police are still looking for the car which may possibly be a red sedan. Read more in the NY Daily News

A 11 year old boy suffered critical injury in a NYC car accident. The young boy was crossing the street at the intersection of Willets Point Blvd and 148th Street in Flushing when a SUV struck him. A witness said she saw the boy flying and then falling on the ground. The boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Further investigation will determine the exact cause of the accident. A woman died in a truck accident in New York last Monday. 68 year old Nuesa Marques-Diniz was crossing 42nd street between Fifth Ave and Madison Ave, in Manhattan, when she was struck by a truck. The accident occurred around 8:00 pm. The woman was a New York resident from Brazil.  The truck belonged to the electrical company Hugh O’Kane Electrical Co. It was transporting two huge spool of wire. The pedestrian was crushed with the front and rear driver-side tires. She died at the scene of the accident.  The truck driver stayed at the scene of the accident. He wasn’t charged. Read more in the NY Daily News

Last week Vision Zero launched a campaign to reduce pedestrian accidents after Daylight Saving Time. Recent statistics have shown that the number of pedestrian fatalities increase by 40% during the 3 months that follow Daylight Saving Time. Poorest visibility related to earlier darkness when most New Yorkers are still outside increases the risk of accidents.

accident sceneA pedestrian who was crossing the street was struck by a bicyclist on Saturday night. The bicyclist didn’t stop. He sped off leaving behind him a pedestrian seriously injured. The accident happened at the intersection of E. 70th Street and First Ave in the Upper East Side of New York around 8:10 pm. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the street when the bicyclist struck him. Witnesses said they heard his head cracking as it slammed on the asphalt. They also said the man had convulsions. The police haven’t apprehended the cyclist yet. Read more in the NY Daily News

9 pedestrians were killed in NYC car accidents last year during the 8 days following the end of the Daylight Saving Time. All the victims were between 55 and 88 years old.  6 of the 9 accidents occurred after sunset. According to data collected between 2010 and 2014, the number of pedestrians dying or being severely injured in car accidents increased by 40% during the last 3 months of the year. Statistics also indicate that crashes involving turns are doubling during the colder and darker months of the year.

As Daylight Saving Time ends this week-end, a $1.5 million Vision Zero campaign will be launched this Friday by the mayor’s office to prevent pedestrian deaths during the most dangerous period of the year.

Yesterday Bill de Blasio was joined by Transportation Commissioner Trottenberg, Aging Commissioner Corrado, Commissioner and Chair of the Taxi and Limousine Commission Joshi and NYPD Chief Chan at One Police Plaza to present the new pedestrian safety campaign to the press.

92-20 Astoria Boulevard view from Goggle mapAn infant died in a car accident last week in Queens. 8 month old Navraj Raju was in a stroller pushed by his mother last Thursday morning when he was struck by a van. The mother and the infant were on the sidewalk when the driver of the van backed out of a driveway and hit the stroller. The van driver was unlicensed. The car accident occurred at 92-20 Astoria Boulevard.  The picture above shows the location of the accident. It is an area particularly difficult to navigate for pedestrians, especially families. Cars parked in front of the building between the deli and the gas station have to back out onto the sidewalk when leaving their parking space. They have reduced visibility when backing out. Additionally vehicular traffic is constantly crossing the sidewalk to access the gas station.

Astoria Boulevard was identified in 2015 as a Vision Zero priority. The segment of Astoria Boulevard between 80th street and 110th street was identified as a pedestrian crash corridor. It is among the top 10% most dangerous corridors for pedestrians in this particular neighborhood.  It is supposed to be re-engineered in the future to make it safer for pedestrians. The proposal from the Department of Transportation to make some specifically dangerous segments of Astoria Boulevard safer can be downloaded here.  However despite fixes being identified for Astoria Boulevard in 2015, not enough is being done by the de Blasio administration to quickly implement these changes. Transportation Alternatives organized a stroller protest to ask the Mayor to fulfill his promise to reduce traffic deaths.
