In 2012, 300 construction workers died and thousands of them suffered severe personal injury as the result of a fall. Year after year, falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry. They can often be prevented by planning ahead to get the job done safely, providing the right equipment to workers and training workers to use equipment and tools safely. To raise awareness about this major safety issue, OSHA will host a National Safety Stand-Down from June 2nd to June 6th. Large and small employers have already committed to voluntary stop work to discuss fall hazards and prevention during this week. OSHA is hoping to reach 25,000 employers and 1 million construction workers.

Seat belts reduce the chance of injury or death during a car accident but 13% of the motorists still don’t get it. According to recent statistics, 52% of all people who died in a car crash in 2012 were not wearing a seat belt. At night time the situation is worst. In 2012, 61% of the motorists who died in a nighttime crash were not wearing their seat belt.

To remind motorists that seat belts can save lives, the NHTSA launched Today its annual “Click it or Ticket Campaign”. Approximately 10,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide will participate in the “Click It or Ticket” mobilization from May 19 through June 1. This year’s campaign includes the “Fake-A-Rooney” advertisement that airs nationally through May 26.

31 pedestrians, 10 bicyclists and 70 motor vehicle occupants suffered personal injury between 2007 and 2011 after they were involved in a traffic accident on Morningside Avenue between W 166th and W 126th street. Speeding is a main concern with 58% of northbound vehicles and 66% of southbound vehicles speeding according to a recent speed survey.

Last week after nine months of stalled deliberation, Community Board 10’s Transportation Committee accepted a proposal by the NYC Department of Transportation to make the dangerous corridor safer. The DOT proposed the reduction of four traffic lines to three on Morning Side Ave between 116th street and 126th street.

A custodian burned his leg after spilling a bottle of nitric acid at Bread and Roses High School in Harlem, NYC. All students had to be evacuated but none of them were injured.

The custodian was moving bottle of chemicals from a classroom when one of them fell on the floor.

It’s not clear what a bottle of such a powerful chemical was doing in a classroom. Nitric Acid is a colorless, fuming and highly corrosive liquid that is commonly used in the chemical industry for fertilizers and explosives.

A 5 year old boy broke his arm and suffered facial injuries and a 6 year old boy suffered traumatic brain injury after the inflatable bounce house in which they were playing was swept by the wind. The “flying” bounce house also knocked down a 10 year old girl who suffered minor injuries. The two young boys fell more than 15 feet as the bounce house continued to rise to 50 feet into the sky. One of the boy fell on a car and the other one fell directly on the asphalt. See video below

Inflatable bouncers are a lot fun for children but they can also lead to serious injuries such as broken bones an concussion. According to the Child Injury Prevention Alliance, every day in the US 30 children are treated in hospital emergency department for injuries related to inflatable bouncers. Bump, bruises and broken Bones are the most common as well as concussions and closed head injuries.

Miguel%27s%20flower%20shop.jpg4 people suffered serious personal injury as a result of a car accident that happened at the intersection of the Cross Bronx Expressway and White Plain Road in the Bronx, NYC, on Sunday morning. A 38 old man crashed his car into a van parked by a flower store injuring the 3 passengers inside it. The crash was so strong that the car flipped on his roof and the minivan crashed into another vehicle. The reckless driver who suffered critical injury to his arm managed to get out of the wreckage and tried to flee the scene. He was caught 2 streets away by the police and brought to the hospital where his arm was amputated. The 3 passengers of the van suffered neck and back injuries and were also taken to a hospital for treatment. 19 people suffered personal injury after a Subway accident during which the F train derailed on a recently installed track near the Broadway and 65th St Station in Queens, NYC. 4 people were seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital while another dozen of passengers were treated at the scene. 1000 people were on board.

A young girl who was crossing Mother Gaston Blvd with her brother was injured after being struck by a police car yesterday night in Brooklyn. The 10 year old pedestrian Tajahnae Price was crossing Mother Gaston Blvd at New Lots Ave in Brownsville when the police car hit her. She went flying through the air and her top teeth were knocked out. She was transported to the Hospital and she is in stable condition.

Children are the most vulnerable pedestrians with middle school youth making up the bulk of injuries and fatalities related to pedestrian accidents involving children younger than 14 year old.

Circus%20Fall.jpg 3 acrobats are in critical condition and 5 others suffered serious personal injury after surviving a 35 foot fall.

A defective clamp that was holding the troupe of acrobats dangling by their hair during a circus act broke and the artists fell to the ground. Read More in the NY Daily News

9 year old Rebecca Ramnarine died and 5 other people suffered personal injury after a reckless driver crashed into the car that Rebecca was riding in with another 11 year old girl and a female driver in Brooklyn, NYC. A third car with 3 occupants was also involved in the crash. According to the media, the driver, 62 year old Kenneth Palache from Long Island, was fleeing the scene of another accident he was allegedly involved in. He ran a red light and crashed into the two other vehicles.

Palache had a suspended license and was arrested for criminally negligent homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle without a license.
