Five people injured and one dead in a multi-car accident in Rosedale, NYC

Five people were sent to the hospital and a 24 year old motorcyclist died in a car crash involving several vehicles near the intersection of Rockaway and Brookville in Queens, NYC. The motorcyclist was riding his bike on Rocakaway Blvd when it broke down. Several people met him and helped him load the bike on a pick up truck. As they were doing so a Chevy van hit the back of the pick up truck and struck them. Another car then hit the Chevy van. The motorcyclist died at the scene and five other people suffered personal injury and were rushed to the hospital.

Deadly car accident on the Bronx River Parkway on Friday night was most probably related to speeding

Two men died and a third one suffered critical personal injury in a car accident that happened last Friday on the Bronx River Parkway in New York around 4:00 am. According to witnesses, the victims were in a blue Mini Cooper and seemed to be racing another car when the 20 year old driver, Xavier Rodriguez, lost control of the vehicle. The car hit a tree and and was sheared in two before bursting into flames. The driver and the front seat passenger were ejected from the car. They were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The driver later died of his injuries. A third passenger, 24 year old Bill Bido, who was in the back seat was badly burned and died at the scene of the crash.

Senator Schumer secures $25 million in federal funding for NYC Vision Zero Initiatives to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries

13 projects to prevent pedestrian and bicycle accidents in New York City are going to be funded by a $25 million federal grant secured by Senator Schumer. Previous Vision Zero Crash analysis and input from communities were used to select the13 project locations. Projects will include an extension of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway; street safety improvements near schools in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island; and pedestrian safety measures along dangerous corridors like Fourth Avenue in Sunset Park.

73 year old New York pedestrian suffers critical personal injury after being struck by 87 year old driver on the Upper West Side

Another pedestrian was hit by a car on West End Avenue. The victim a 73 year old woman is in critical condition. She was crossing West End Ave yesterday night around 8 pm when an auto driven by an 87 year old man ran over her. The driver stayed at the scene and wasn’t charged. (read more in the Gothamist)

West End is very a very dangerous avenue. This year, 61 year old Jean Chamber and 9 year old Cooper Stock were both killed in car accidents on West End Ave. Between 2008 and 2012, 96 pedestrians, 41 cyclists and 160 motor vehicle passengers were injured in crashes on West End. To stop the bleeding, The NYC Community Board 7 approved a complete redesign of West End Ave (see previous blog) that should be completed before the winter. (see West Side Rag)

A Bronx boy suffered severe burn injuries after some hot water from a hot dog stand spilled on him

A 4 year old boy was rushed to the hospital after he was severely burned by hot water spilling out of a Hot Dog stand near his home in the Bronx, NYC.

The National Safety Council estimates that 400 people will die and 42,300 will suffer personal injury in a car accident during Labor Day week-end

Based on previous statistics of car crashes, The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that car accidents will kill 400 people and injure 42,300 this Labor Day week-end in the US. Here are a few safety tips to make your ride safer this week-end:

Buckle up. The NSC estimates that out of the 400 fatalities estimated for this long week-end, 144 could be avoided by buckling up
Do not use your cell phone while driving
Set up your GPS, radio or any info in-vehicle infotainment systems before you start driving your car
Give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your destination so you don’t get frustrated while you are driving
If you are planning to drink make sure there is a non drinking designated driver or simply avoid taking your car and plan for a taxi
Be cautious and drive defensively especially if the weather is bad.

5 people injured including a newborn baby and a pedestrian in an accident during which a drunk driver crashed into another car in Harlem, NYC

Daniel Rodriguez was drunk when he crashed his van into another car occupied by a 9 day old baby girl, her dad and a friend. The impact was so strong that the car jumped the curb injuring a pedestrian. After the crash the car started to smoke. A 60 year old man who witnessed the accident was able to run to the car, remove the baby from her seat and take her to safety. The driver of the van, the pedestrian and the passengers of the car including the newborn suffered personal injury and were taken to the hospital to be treated. The accident happened Friday night at 7:30 pm at the corner of 145th Street and Powell Blvd in Harlem, New York.Read more in the New York Daily News.

StarNetworks USA recalls its Magnicubes products because they can cause serious personal injury or death if they are ingested by children or teenagers

As part of a settlement of an administrative case based on product defect filed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in December 2012, the company Star Networks USA announced a voluntary recall of all Magnicubes Spheres sets and Magnicube Cubes sets. These sets contains high power rare earth magnets that create a substantial injury hazard. The CPSC received numerous reports describing teenagers or children who died or suffered serious personal injury requiring surgery after ingesting the small magnets.
