According to an article published today by the New York Post, this particular section of the Bronx River Parkway is the most dangerous and expensive stretch of road in the city and 16 people died in accidents at this spot. The city already paid an $11.5 million settlement last year for a fatal crash that happened in 2006.

More lawsuits are underway, including the one handled by Chris. Chris was quoted in the article saying the Jersey barriers – finally installed two weeks later – “could have prevented this, it’s that simple,”.

A scaffold accident caused by an equipment failure of the traction hoist brake mechanism that supports one side of the rig, left two window washers dangling outside the 69th floor of One World Trade Center in Manhattan, NYC which opened for business last week.

The two window washers, Juan Lizama and Juan Lopez, were trapped for two hours until firefighters were able to rescue them. The two workers were brought to safety through a hole that firefighters cut in one of the windows.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the accident. It is not the first time that Tractel Group, the company that supplied the scaffold, has had an accident with its material. The company was fined $21,000 in 2008 after one worker died in an accident during which a scaffold that the Tractel Group had previously repaired gave way. Last June in midtown Manhattan two other window washers were left dangling 500 feet above ground after a scaffold built by the Tractel Group snapped. They were rescued by firefighters. A young pedestrian was seriously injured in an accident during which he was struck and trapped under a NYPD School Safety Van which was traveling south on Coney Island Ave. The driver, a school safety agent, swerved to avoid a car which was making a left turn Northbound and hit a 13 year old boy near 18th Ave in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, NY. His backpack got caught on the bumper of the Police van and he was dragged under the vehicle. He couldn’t move. A truck driver who witnessed the scene ran to the rescue and used his tow to lift the van and extract the boy, most probably saving his life.The boy is at the hospital in stable condition.

One person was critically injured, 3 other people were seriously injured and two other people sustained minor injuries in a violent car crash which happened early in the morning on the FDR Drive in Manhattan, NYC.

The crash was caused by a wrong way driver who was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of the highway around 4:00 am in the morning. The car traveled approximately 10 blocks from 34th street and then collided with two SUVs.

The driver of the vehicle sustained head injuries and was transferred to the hospital in critical condition. 5 other people were also rushed to the hospital and one person was treated at the scene.

Bronx cyclists and pedestrians will soon have more space to safely walk and bike as a second stretch of the Bronx River Greenway is about to be revamped. A new bike lane and play spaces will be created along the Bronx River from E. 233rd St. to Duncomb Ave in Williamsbridge as part of a $3.25 million project.

Threee more pedestrians died this weekend in New York City after being struck by vehicles in three separate accidents which happened in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

76 year old Melvina Hibbert was hit by a car on Conduit Blvd, near Belmont Ave in East New York. The impact was so strong that her body flew against the windshield and destroyed it (see picture in the NY Daily News. She died from her injury at the hospital.

The second victim was 79 year old Edmund Chow who was struck by a van as he crossed Hillside Ave near 257th Street. He also died at the hospital.

After two fatal crane accidents killed several people in Manhattan in 2008, 65 safety fixes were identified by consultants but only 8 (12%) of them were implemented, 17 (26%) were partially implemented, 18 (28%) were in progress and 22 (34%) had not been implemented according to a recent audit by New York City Controller Scott Stringer.

In 2008 the Building Department paid CTL Engineers & Construction Technology Consultants $3.9 million to prepare proposals on how to improve safety at New York construction sites and avoid catastrophic crane accidents such as the collapse of a 300-foot crane that killed 7 people on East 51st Street in Manhattan or the collapse of another crane that killed two construction workers 2 months later. The consultants provided a list of 65 recommendations and were paid another $1.9 million to assist the DOB with the implementation of these recommendations. They were supposed to have 49 of the 65 changes implemented in the next two years but they fell far short of that according to Stringer’s investigation.

The audit identified serious weakness in the New York Cit Department Building Oversight that costed tax payers million of dollars.

A suit was filed yesterday in Manhattan Supreme Court. The suit alleges among other claims that the accident was the result of “gross negligence” as well as “abject dereliction and reckless disregard” for the safety of students and staff by the City Department of Education.

Jeff further commented in The New York Post “He’s horrifically scarred, wearing all sorts of protective clothing and a brace on his neck.” It was a parent’s worst nightmare, adding that the “courageous” 11th grader is back in class at the prestigious Beacon.

The Merrill’s Law or “safe distance” Law was created after Merrill Cassell, a devoted cyclist, died in a bicycle accident during which he was struck by a bus that sideswiped him as he rode his bike along Route 119 in Greenburg (see video below).

The Law was enacted 5 years ago but very few tickets have been written under the Law.
