After a first US patient died from Ebola yesterday in a hospital that handled the case in a very negligent manner (see article in Reuters), New York hospitals and airports are gearing up for the worst. Starting this Saturday all passengers arriving from the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone will have their temperature taken. Passengers suspected to have contracted the virus will be sent to Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan. Bellevue can treat up to 4 patients in dedicated isolation rooms and 9 additional rooms may be similarly equipped if necessary. The staff has received training related to leave-no-skin-cell uncovered precautions and all necessary protective gear is available.

At least two passengers of an MTA bus were injured in a crash during which a MTA bus jumped the curb, crashed into a tree and ended its course near the canopy of a building entrance on Fifth Ave in Manhattan. The driver who apparently passed out behind the wheel was not injured but was taken to the hospital for observation. According to the NY Daily News the driver was diabetic but the test administered after the accident showed an acceptable blood-sugar level.

5 adults and an infant suffered severe personal injury after the driver of a box truck lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a bagel store located at the corner of 76th road and Queens Boulevard. The truck went almost entirely into the bagel shop. The truck accident happened yesterday morning around 10:00 am as customers were eating breakfast at “Bagels for You”. A witness who was sitting at a bus stop across the street believed the accident was intentional. He saw the truck driving very slowly and all of sudden driving up the curb and aiming right toward the store. The driver remained at the scene and the police say that so far they don’t suspect any criminal intent. The investigation is still ongoing.

Nobody was injured in a train accident in Maspeth, Queens, NYC, during which a Long Island Rail Road Locomotive jumped the tracks and spilled diesel fuel. The locomotive was on a freight line, coming from Jamaica going to Long Island City when the accident happened. The line is only used for freight such as large containers of garbage and to move equipment. According to the NY Daily News, residents who live near the tracks are concerned about repeated train accidents along the freight rail lines in Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale.

Cristina Alonso died yesterday night after she was hit by a SUV while she was crossing 14th Ave at 86th Street in Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, NYC. The police said the she was struck by the car while walking outside the crosswalk. She died at the Hopsital.

A pedestrian suffered personal injury after he was hit by a yellow cab on the sidewalk on East 59th Street near Madison Ave in New York yesterday around lunch time. The cab driver lost control of his vehicle, jumped the curb and hit the man before crashing into a building. According to witnesses the cab driver was trying to avoid a cyclist before the accident happened.

A 6 year old boy and his 11 year old brothers died yesterday after they got trapped in a fire that erupted in a house in Queens, NYC. A man who tried to save them suffered severe injury after he was forced to jump out of a second floor window to escape the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Since the beginning of the year, there has been no deaths related to traffic accidents in Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside in Queens, NYC, after the police in this area doubled down on their enforcement of traffic violations as part of the Vision Zero Initiative to reduce traffic fatalities. This is quite an achievement compared to previous traffic statistics in the precinct where at the end of September 2013 8 people including 5 pedestrians were killed in vehicle accidents.

The police have been especially targeting drivers speeding and texting while driving as these behaviors are the two main contributing factors of pedestrian deaths in New York. Speeding tickets were up 30% compared to 2013. Police also doubled the number drunk drivers arrests with 112 people arrested so far compared to a total of 52 in 2013.

A 52 year old man was in critical condition after he was struck by a car on Pitkin Ave near Berriman Street in Brooklyn, NYC on Saturday Afternoon. According to the police, the man was crossing against the light in the pedestrian crosswalk when he was struck by a 68 year old woman driving a Mecedes SUV.
