The crash occurred at a hazardous shared space where a bus stop merges with a bike lane, highlighting the mounting safety risks for pedestrians in mixed-use corridors. Photos of the site show the so-called “bike lane” blending directly onto the pedestrian sidewalk without any pavement markings, creating a hazardous environment for people stepping off the bus.

According to police, the 86-year-old driver of a red Chrysler Town & Country minivan may have suffered a stroke before reversing onto the sidewalk near West Fifth Street and Neptune Avenue around 12:51 p.m. The vehicle struck three women standing near a flower bed outside 486 Neptune Avenue.

Witnesses described an emotional scene as paramedics performed CPR on the elderly victim while others comforted the injured women. All three were taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where the 89-year-old was pronounced dead. The 75-year-old and 43-year-old victims were listed in stable condition. The driver remained at the scene and was later hospitalized.

Moments later, he slammed head-on into a Honda Pilot traveling lawfully through the intersection at Central Avenue and Gates Avenue.

The fatal hit-and-run occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Suydam Street, on the border of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick, around 3:45 a.m.

According to the NYPD, the 47-year-old man was crossing the street when he was hit by a vehicle traveling north on Broadway. The driver fled the scene, leaving the victim to die in the roadway. Police responding to the scene found the man deceased.

The suspect’s vehicle—a maroon Chevy Trax with temporary paper plates—smashed into multiple parked cars and a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee before the driver abandoned the SUV and fled on foot. Ms. Cifuni was transported to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
