A tragic collision in Greenwich Village on Thursday morning underscores the persistent dangers pedestrians face on New York City streets — even in marked crosswalks. According to police, a 61-year-old driver fatally struck a 27-year-old woman while driving the wrong way down Morton Street, a one-way block in the West Village.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. when the driver, behind the wheel of a rented black GMC Savana van, exited a parking garage and turned against traffic toward Seventh Avenue South. Investigators believe the motorist was attempting to take a shortcut to avoid circling several blocks. Witnesses reported the impact was so severe that the victim was thrown to the ground and appeared to convulse before first responders arrived. She was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes later.

A devthe New York intersection where the tourists where hit by a carastating hit-and-run crash in Midtown Manhattan has left one pedestrian dead and another critically injured, underscoring the dangers of reckless driving in New York City and the legal consequences that follow.

According to police and prosecutors, 50-year-old Alexandra Sabine Lewalter Maric, a tourist from Hamburg, Germany, was fatally struck near Bryant Park last week. Her husband, 55, suffered a severe skull fracture and remains in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.

The driver, Mohammad Abouzaid, 40, of the Bronx, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Sienna minivan that was blocking the intersection at West 40th Street and Fifth Avenue. Authorities say he suddenly reversed into the crosswalk, hitting the couple and a nearby box truck. After the collision, Abouzaid fled the scene, only to be later apprehended and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Surveillance footage confirmed his involvement.

A DEP vessel similar to the one that exploded in front of the Harlem FacilityAn explosion aboard a sewage transport vessel docked at the North River Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility in West Harlem has resulted in one fatality and two injuries. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2025, and involved three employees of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) performing work on the vessel.

The blast originated in one of the tank holds of the vessel, used to transport raw sewage, while it was docked on the Hudson River near 135th Street. The explosion generated a plume of heavy black smoke and reportedly shook the surrounding area. According to the FDNY, the force of the blast was so powerful that it threw one worker into the space between the pier and the vessel. That worker, identified as Raymond Feige, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional DEP workers were transported to area hospitals. Their conditions have not been released.

The U.S. Coast Guard indicated the explosion may be related to “hot work” operations, which often involve welding, cutting, or other activities using high heat in confined spaces. Such operations are subject to stringent safety regulations due to their high risk of ignition in enclosed or hazardous environments.

According to the NYPD, Brooks was crossing diagonally at approximately 4:27 a.m. when the eastbound van, operated by a 41-year-old woman who had the green light, struck him.
