schoolbus.jpgAn unlicensed Queens driver who was trying to drive around a stopped school bus hit 6 year old Vincente Estremera as he was getting out of the bus. The driver first stopped and picked up the young boy and told the mother that her son looked OK but he could bring him to his doctor. He then put the child down, got in his car and left the scene of the accident. Vincente was diagnosed with a broken femur and needed to have plates and screws surgically implanted.

The NYPD busted the driver, 47 year old Garfield A. Myrie, at his home. Myrie is facing felony assault, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless endangerment and driving without a license.

speed%20cameras.jpgToo many children in New York City died or suffered personal injury because a speeding car hit them on their way to or from their school.

To prevent these types of accidents and as part of the Vision Zero initiative, the NYC Department of Transportation started to install speed-cameras in school zones. 19 cameras have been installed so far in the city.

Last September the speed-cameras indicated that on average 3,539 drivers in a day drove at least 10 mph over the limit. As word spread about the cameras, drivers became more careful and in December he average number of drivers speeding at least 10 mph over the speed limit went down to 1461.

132 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in 2014 in New York City according to preliminary numbers announced recently by city officials. According to them these numbers are the lowest since 1910 when the city started to provide accurate traffic accident statistics. (See article in the New York Times).

The NYPD also released their monthly collisions statistics recently but only until November. The statistics for the year 2014 will be released at the end of this month. According to this data the number of people killed in a traffic accident in November 2014 was 25 compared to 35 in 2013. November 2013 was the worst month for traffic fatalities in NYC in 2013 followed by August 2013. This year so far the monthly number of traffic fatalities never went above 28, an improvement compared to 2013.

The number of people killed in a vehicle accident since the beginning of 2014 until the end of November is 238 compared to 261 during the same period for 2013, a decrease of 9% . The total number of people injured for this same period of 2014 is 46,769 compared to 50,541 in 2013 a decrease of 7.5%. Even though there were less deaths and personal injuries, NYPD statistics indicated that for the same time frame the number of motor vehicle crashes is 1% higher with 187,838 accidents in 2014 compared to 186,130 in 2013.

3 people were critically injured, 3 others were seriously hurt and 19 of them suffered minor personal injuries in an accident between two cars and an MTA bus. The accident happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of Utica Ave and Clarendon Rd in East Flatbush, Brooklyn NYC.

Dylon%20Ramirez.jpg16 year old Dylon Ramirez is dead and a 15 year old female is in critical condition as a result of a pedestrian accident that happened yesterday around 5pm at the intersection of Baychester Ave and Crawford Ave in the Bronx, NYC.

Both teenagers were crossing the road when a Honda hit them. The impact propelled the young man into the other lane of traffic where he was struck by another car.

The driver of the Honda fled but later came back to the scene of the accident and was arrested by the Police.

Blima Friedman died and her pregnant mother suffered personal injury after they were hit by a 22 year old driver who was working as a valet parker yesterday night around 9 pm in Brooklyn. The two pedestrians were crossing 60th street midblock between 17th Ave and 18th Ave when the accident happened (read more in the NY Daily News.

A young man is dead and 14 other people are injured including several of them in critical condition after a massive fire destroyed apartments in a three-story building on Flatbush Ave in Brooklyn, NYC early this morning. The fire broke out above the stores and destroyed all the apartments. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident.

4 people suffering minor personal injuries were hospitalized and 10 other residents as well as a crew of firefighters responding to a sick person were evacuated from a Bronx Building in which Carbon Monoxide was building up.

The firefighters were responding to a call for a cardiac arrest which turned out to be an asthma attack induced by the CO leak. Because carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless firefighters didn’t suspect that CO built up in the building when they arrived.

Thankfully the EMS crew arrived just after them and their CO meters started to ring. Everybody was evacuated from the building and a few residents suffering minor injuries were hospitalized.

ATV.jpgA man driving his ATV in the Bronx, NYC died in the hospital after he was inadvertently rear ended by his friend who was also driving an ATV. None of the two men were wearing a helmet when the accident happened. The friend who suffered a leg injury was charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving and was issued violations for unregistered reckless driving, riding without an authorized helmet, and for having no insurance. scaffold.jpg New York Labor Law Section 240 or Scaffold Law was enacted more than 100 years ago to protect construction workers from elevated work related accidents. It holds general contractors, owners and others liable if unsafe conditions at the job site lead to a worker’s injury or death (to learn more about NY Labor Law 240 see recent presentation by NY Construction Accident Attorney Anthony Gair)

The construction industry has been trying to repeal and amend this law since it was created and the last attack came with a report entitled “The Costs of Labor Law 240 on New York’s economy and Public Infrastructure” and published by the The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy research arm of the State University of New York. The report uses questionable statistic methodologies to blame The Scaffold Law for creating more accidents and more injuries.

The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) discovered that the report was actually commissioned by the New York Civil Justice Institute, a front group that was specifically created for this purpose by the Lawsuits Reform Alliance of New York who paid $82,800 for it. The Lawsuits Reform Alliance of New York is well known for lobbying against laws protecting plaintiffs in favor of the construction industry and other corporate interests. The CPD and the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH) just published a paper entitled “Fatally Flawed: Why the Rockefeller Institute’s Scaffold Law Report Doesn’t add up”
