The off-label use of Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) products in implant-based breast reconstruction can result in post surgical complications and problems for patients up to two years after the surgery according to a recent analysis by the FDA.

Off-label use not approved by FDA

Accellular Dermal Matrix is a type of surgical mesh that is developed from human or animal skin.  It has been approved by the FDA for specific use such as hernia surgery and more recently many surgeons specializing in breast reconstruction after a mastectomy have been using the product off-label.  The off-label use of ADM for breast reconstruction has never been approved by the FDA and a recent analysis found that some patients suffered complications up to two years after the surgery.

headquarter of HyundaiOwners of selected models of Hyundai Genesis cars as well as other electric models have been warned by Hyundai that their cars were at risk of catching fire and should be parked away from home and other structures or flammable material until they repair their vehicles.

Models of Hyundai Genesis sold in 2015 and 2016, Hyundai Genesis G80 sold between 2017 and 2020 and Hyundai Genesis G70 sold between 2019 and 2021 might have defective anti-lock brake system modules that could malfunction internally and cause an electrical short resulting in engine compartment fire while driving or during parking. Owners of these vehicles must get them repaired and make sure to park them away from their home or other structures that might catch fire until repairs are done.

Hyundai also issued another recall for fire on some of its electrical vehicles. Some 2019-2020 Hyundai Kona Electric and 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric vehicles might have defective battery cells causing internal electric shorts that can result in a fire while driving, parking or charging the battery. The owners of these vehicles have also been asked by Hyundai to park their vehicle away from anything that could catch fire until the defect is repaired.  Hyundai is facing similar problems in Korea and vehicle owners are not happy about the manner Hyundai has been handling the repair according to a recent article in Reuters .

Location-of-the-distributing-centerThird Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, has a long history of truck accidents and it might get even worse with the creation of a new distribution center that has been dubbed the largest distribution center in the country by its developers. Located inside Sunset Industrial Park on Third Avenue between 19th and 21st Street, the future building  will occupy a space that is the equivalent of 22 football fields. The huge 4-story building will feature a ramp system that will allow the transport of goods to awaiting trucks and dispatch merchandise for same day delivery.

Sunset Park residents who were already upset with the actual traffic conditions on Third Avenue, have been asking the city to conduct an impact study but nothing has been done. Since 2019, 6 people were killed in traffic accidents on Third Avenue.

bronx car accident preventionSome NYC Bronx students fed up with a high number of car accidents near their school took the initiative to study what could be done to make their street safer. As part of Vision Zero, the DOT School Safety in collaboration with the I  Challenge Myself (ICM) afterschool program worked with  a group of Bronx High School students to develop a proposal to reduce traffic accidents in a section of Morrisiana where multiple schools are located.  The section under study covers a rectangle located between East 161st Street, Trinity Avenue, East 166th Street and Prospect Avenue.

This section of the Bronx was identified by Vision Zero as a priority area. Over a period a five years more than 200 people were injured in crashes. Among them were 47 pedestrians, 11 bicyclists, and 143 motor vehicle occupants.

Students found that large roadways encourage speeding and make it difficult for pedestrians to safely cross the street

child head injuryA   U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) analysis looking at personal injury during the coronavirus pandemic shows that while globally less Americans checked in at the emergency room for product related injuries during the pandemic, the number of severe cases remained mostly stable.   As emergency rooms were overwhelmed with Covid19 patients, Americans who suffered minor injuries opted not to visit the ER. As a result ER treatments for minor product-related injuries decreased by 24%. Visits for severe product related injuries only decreased by 1%.

construction worker using laptopInspections by the DOT play an important role in keeping NYC construction sites safe and preventing dangerous construction accidents. The covid19  crisis has demonstrated that new online technologies can sometimes be used to replace meetings in person or visiting locations, saving time and resources.  The NYC Department of Building is testing  options to conduct Remote Video Inspections instead of sending inspectors on location.

A pilot program that started on March 19th is now being run until April 30 and proposing to Staten Island contractors who require a CO-NB-ALT1 Construction DEV inspection and to Brooklyn contractors who require a “SWO Rescission/Work Without Permit Construction ENF” inspection to do these remotely.

While doing the request for such inspections, contractors have the option to fill out a Request for a Remote Video Inspection and Attestation. The contractor and any other authorized attendees will then receive an email invitation for the remote inspection with a link to an app that attendees can download on their phone to participate in the online inspection.
